A New York woman has been reunited with the hero bystander who pulled her from a burning car.
Their powerful story of survival and gratitude was shared recently on national television, reminding many of the impact of courage in moments of crisis.
“I wouldn’t be here had it not been for Nathan [Felix],” said 69-year-old Mary Frances McLoryd.

The car accident rescue that changed everything
One Sunday morning, Mary Frances drove along a remote stretch of highway in Chester, New York, around 4 a.m.
She admitted that fatigue overcame her and she fell asleep at the wheel.
Her SUV rolled over and left her pinned inside as flames quickly spread through the vehicle.
Mary Frances remembered trying to shield herself from the heat, believing she had no way out.
Her situation was dire until help arrived in the form of a stranger who became a lifeline.

A hero bystander runs toward the flames
Nathan Felix, 23, was passing by when he noticed the wreck. Without hesitation, he stopped his car and rushed to help, beginning a dramatic burning car rescue.
“I could hear somebody screaming,” Nathan said. “And then she’s like, ‘Help me! Help me!’ I’m just … hearing her in there panicking, so I’m trying to do whatever I can to possibly assist her.”
Moments later, police arrived on the scene.
Body camera footage shows officers handing Nathan a fire extinguisher as they worked together to gain access to the SUV.
An officer broke open the sunroof, giving Nathan enough space to reach inside.
Through that small opening, he managed to pull Mary Frances out of the burning vehicle.
The emergency rescue came just in time.
Authorities described the scene as overwhelming, with smoke, flames, and panic filling the night air.
But thanks to Nathanโs quick actions, Mary Frances survived.

The good Samaritanโs life-saving role
Mary Frances later said her SUVโs safety system had dialed 911 automatically after the crash. Still, she believed the Good Samaritan truly saved her life.
She suffered burns covering more than 20% of her body and was rushed to the hospital, where she spent more than a month recovering.
The ordeal left her with scars, medical bills, and ongoing appointments, but she said none of that mattered compared to the fact that she was alive.
For her, the young man who risked his life in the car accident rescue is more than a strangerโhe has become family.

Hero bystander and survivor reunite
Earlier this week, Mary Frances could return home and meet Nathan again.
Their reunion was filled with emotion as they reflected on the night that connected their lives forever.
“It was overwhelming what this young man did,” Mary Frances said in reflection.
She explained that most people would never run toward a vehicle engulfed in flames, yet Nathan did so without hesitation.
“I can’t thank Nathan enough. I don’t even have words to thank him. I don’t know how to thank him. Other than to say, if you ever need me, I’m always here in your life.”
Nathan, who has been called a hero bystander and a Good Samaritan, downplayed the praise, saying he simply acted on instinct.
For Mary Frances, however, his bravery represents hope, selflessness, and the kind of courage that can never be forgotten.

From tragedy to gratitude
What began as a terrifying car accident rescue is a story of resilience, compassion, and new beginnings.
Mary Frances continues to recover, but knowing she has Nathan in her life strengthens her for the journey ahead.
The night of the emergency rescue left scars. Still, it also created an unbreakable bond between a survivor and the stranger who refused to walk away.
For Mary Frances, Nathan will always be more than just a passerby.
He will always be her hero bystanderโthe man who gave her a second chance at life.
