Mike and Sally Taylor have chosen a tiny house for retirement, settling into a charming 200-square-foot adobe house in the serene landscapes of Tennessee.
With its two cozy lofts and thoughtful design, this tiny home showcases the benefits of downsizing, offering affordability and a more intentional way of living.

Tiny house for retirement: a new chapter for the Taylors
For the Taylors, downsizing to a tiny home was an unexpected but life-changing decision.
After years in a sprawling 18,800-square-foot house in Ohio, the couple stumbled upon a small adobe house for sale. Initially, they thought it would be a vacation retreat.
“When we first bought the house,” Mike recalls, “I’m thinking, ‘Well, this is really smaller than what I thought.’ And I turned around, looked at her, and she had her mouth open looking kind of funny, and I thought, ‘Oh.'”

However, what started as doubt soon turned into excitement. The very next day, Mike noticed a shift.
As they sat together the next day, Mike noticed her looking around the house. He had a feeling something was coming.
She turned to him and said she could see herself living there. She explained that with the open space, she could always see where he was as if the entire house was one big roomโthere was no escaping each other.
This revelation marked a turning point, prompting them to sell their large home and fully embrace the tiny house lifestyle.
A Comfortable and Cozy Space

Despite its size, the Taylors’ new home offers surprising comfort. The kitchen is small but well-organized.
“We have a very nice kitchen,” says Sally, adding that they have made a few changes to the kitchen, including upgrading to a larger refrigerator.
The bathroom, though compact, has a 32-inch shower and an innovative hands-free sink.
“There’s no sink, so I bought one of these little sinks that sit on top the back of the toilet,” Mike said, explaining that the system allows you to wash your hands, and surprisingly, kids seem to enjoy it.

Moreover, the soapy water from washing your hands gets recycled into the tank. When you flush the toilet, that water flows into the bowl, helping to keep it clean.
The living area is open, filled with natural light, and equipped with a mini-split heating and cooling system.
Mike points out that the area is tranquil. While someone might drive by occasionally, it’s peaceful, especially during the day.
You can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the comfort of the space, whether it’s lounging or watching TV.

Two lofts provide sleeping areas, accessible by a staircase and ladder. “We also have a queen-sized mattress. It’s about 12 inches deep in the mattress,” Sally describes. “Still gives you plenty of seating room when you sit on the mattress.”
A simpler, more fulfilling life
For the Taylors, their decision to move into a tiny home has brought financial freedom and a more profound sense of peace and fulfillment.
“Everybody all these politicians are talking about affordable housing, affordable housing,” Mike says.

The focus is on simplicity, letting things fall into place where needed. It’s hard to understand why people hold on to so much stuff at their age.
They’ve reached a point where, if they wanted to travel to Europe, they could afford to do so.
The smaller space means less maintenance and more time to focus on enjoying life together and following their passions.
Living intentionally in a tiny house for retirement

The Taylors’ story is part of the growing trend of intentional living. By downsizing and simplifying, they’ve found greater freedom and joy.
Sally offers advice to others considering tiny living: “One thing I would say is if you’re looking to go tiny and you are with a partner, it’s important that you want to be with your partner all the time. Because living tiny, you are with each other constantly. If you don’t get along and you’ve got to have your private space, it’s not the life for you.”
For the Taylors, who genuinely enjoy each other’s company, their tiny retirement home has become the perfect place to live a rich, contented life.

Their journey highlights how embracing a smaller, more sustainable lifestyle can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment.
