This teen was in desperate need of food — but he ended up with a lot more

A kind encounter between a 16-year-old boy and a young man is inspiring people across the globe to believe in the kindness of people and be a living proof that kindness is free! The 16-year-old boy, Chauncy Jones is not your ordinary teenage boy.

At his young age, he already has the determination to soar higher than the problems life handed him, a vision of his future, and a matured mind. Despite being 16-year-old, Chauncy was trying to get a job in order to help his mother settle their rent, pay bills, and buy food for their family. At the same time, he does this while keeping his straight-A grades!

It was in one of Chauncy’s attempt to help his mother make ends meet that he encountered Matt White, a young man from Memphis who was shopping at Kroger. He was in the high-end store in hopes of getting something to eat. Chauncy approached Matt and asked if he could assist him and carry his bags to his car. In exchange for his assistance, he asked if he could have a pack of glazed donuts.

Matt, the young man from Memphis was taken aback by the teenager’s offer. Feeling for Chauncy, the young man decided to give Chauncy more than just the donuts he was asking for. The generous stranger bought groceries such as toiletry items, cereals, and other food for the teenager and his mother, Barbara.

Surprisingly, Matt’s kindness did not end there. He even delivered the groceries and gave the hardworking teenager a ride home.

Matt was inspired by Chauncy’s positive outlook in life despite the hard situation he is facing that he wrote his remarkable experience and shared it on his Facebook account.

“I just met the most inspiring person ever. His name is Chauncy Jones. He’s a 16-year-old from Memphis … He approached me while I was shopping for produce asking if he could help me carry my grocery bags to my car in exchange for buying him a pack of glazed donuts.” Matt said, narrating how he met the inspiring teenager.

“This kid looked like he had been turned down 100 times. He looked ashamed, hungry and broken. In my heart, I screamed a loud “yes!”, But to him, I just chuckled and said, “yeah dude, we’ll get you some donuts.” I asked him if he was by himself and he said that he had come all the way out here with the hopes of someone buying him something to eat because he and his mother had nothing at home. He had no phone, a bus pass, and he was depending on the graces of a stranger to feed him within the hour before the bus left.” Matt continued.

“So, needless to say, he and I went on a shopping spree. We had so much fun! We got cereal and chips and frozen veggies, pizzas, Cheetos, melons and pasta, peanut butter, milk, soap, toothbrushes, just a little bit of everything. All the while we talked and he told me how he makes straight A’s in school and is trying to get a job to help his mom pay rent. This kid was amazing.” Matt recalled, remembering how much he enjoyed talking to Chauncy.

“Chauncy kept calling himself poor, but he told me that one day he was gonna be wealthy and own his own businesses so that he could help other people in his neighborhood and buy them groceries like me. I was in awe.” Matt added, expressing his respect for the teenager who already has a clear vision of his future.

On the same Facebook post, Matt shared how his meeting with Chauncy is a very humbling experience.

“I gave him a ride home so that he didn’t have to take the bus and when we got to his house I was truly humbled. He wasn’t kidding. He and his mom had nothing. They didn’t even have beds or furniture. They were sleeping on pads made out of sleeping bags; they had two lamps and nothing in their fridge.

Nothing. His mother was so sweet but very fragile. I couldn’t tell what it was, but she had some sort of physical and/ or mental disability that made her shake and made walking difficult. I thought I was going to cry.” Matt shared, illustrating how dire Chauncy’s situation is that it almost brought tears to his eyes.

“As we unpacked the food into their kitchen, you could see the hope coming back into Chauncy’s eyes. He knew he wasn’t going to be hungry. He looked like a kid again. As I was leaving, I gave him a hug and told him how much God loved him and that he was going to grow up to be an incredible man. I’ll never forget that hug. It meant more to me than any possession I have. Our God is an awesome God, and we can never be thankful enough for the blessings we have.”

Though the kindness and compassion he had shown to the struggling mother and son was already amazing in its own right, Matt felt that he needed to do more for Chauncy and Barbara. In his strong desire to make a big difference to the life of the two, Matt created a GoFundMe page which he called as Chauncy’s Chance.

Initially, Matt intended to raise money so that Chauncy could purchase a lawnmower so he can work by mowing people’s lawn. On the same page, Matt also indicated some items such as clothes, furniture, and CD player to make the mother-and-son’s home be more habitable.

But Matt and Chauncy’s story went viral that the page was able to raise around $342,106! The money they have raised is more than enough to help Matt and Barbara have a better living condition.

“As of today, Barbara and Chauncy have a new life. God has provided for them a home, a car, a new school, he has restored Barbara’s health and continues to present them with endless opportunities for the future. Every dollar donated to Chauncy’s Chance was put into a protected trust that will provide them a secure future for decades. In every sense of the word, God has provided,” Matt said, updating the people who were touched by Chauncy’s story.

“Thank you again for being willing to touch a life, to make a difference, to give Chauncy a chance.” Matt said.
