80-year-old retiree is aging in place and enjoys independence in a single-level tiny home

An 80-year-old retiree enjoys simple, independent living in a single-level tiny home with her dog, which she finds to be the perfect size to suit her health needs.

The Windward Place in Oviedo, Florida, isn’t just a home for Peggy; it’s a sign of her newfound freedom.

After living a long life filled with ups and downs, Peggy loves being able to decide things for herself.

She picks out her furniture and decor, making her space her own.

Having control over her surroundings makes Peggy feel strong and capable.

It shows her resilience and adaptability, qualities that have helped her as she gets older.

“I make my own decisions; I’m in charge of me. What I want to put in my tiny house and take out of my tiny house is up to me. I’m in control, which I think so many people my age don’t have,” she said.

Peggy has lived in her 438-square-foot single-level tiny home for over two years.

It was built by the talented people at Cornerstone, and Peggy loves how cozy and charming it is.

She’s also made some great friends among the four neighbors who live nearby.

They help each other out and have become like family to Peggy, making her transition to tiny house living even more enjoyable.

Outside her home, Peggy finds joy in simple things. She spends time on her deck, reading books, or caring for her plants. She loves listening to the rain while she’s out there.

Inside, every part of her home has a story to tell.

Peggy said inside her single-level tiny home is all about her, with stuff she loves and what’s on her mind.

It’s like a life story, making her feel really happy. In the living room, she introduces her dog, Buffy, who’s always by her side.

Peggy also shows a futon that turns into a bed when guests stay over. She also has an exercise bike for workouts and therapy.

Each part of the house has something special, like a piece of furniture from her dad and old family photos she loves.

Peggy feels like she’s on an adventure in her home, surrounded by things she loves.

The kitchen is the busiest spot in Peggy’s home. Even though it’s small, Peggy cooks tasty and healthy meals there.

She has a full-size stove and microwave, lots of cupboard space, and a dishwasher, so everything she needs is right at hand.

Peggy may have had to say goodbye to some of her fancy dishes, but she’s happy with the simpler setup in her kitchen.

Moving on, Peggy shows her bedroom, where she has handy stuff like a washer/dryer and a bed that can move up and down.

Moreover, she considers a backyard-facing window essential, acknowledging the uncertainty of potentially being bedridden.

She desires to appreciate the outdoors while inside, preparing for future limitations.

She remembers how hard it was to downsize from her big family home, but she feels better knowing her family and the Cornerstone team were there for her.

Meanwhile, amid her daily life in a tiny house, Peggy has found a new hobby: RC sailboats.

“I was really crushed when, after my surgery, I found out that I was unbalanced. I’ve sailed all my life, and I now cannot sail because I could fall right out of the boat or hurt myself somehow,” Peggy shared.

Even though she can’t sail in real boats anymore because of her health, she’s discovered a fun way to keep sailing with remote-controlled models.

Being part of a sailing club gives her a sense of belonging and introduces her to many other people who love sailing, too.

When Peggy sails her little boats, she feels happy and supported by her new friends, showing that even small things can bring great joy.

As Peggy looks back on her move from a big family home to her cozy tiny house, she remembers how hard it was to downsize.

But with her family’s strong support and the Cornerstone team’s help, she managed the change gracefully and strength.

Financially, living in her tiny house is manageable and freeing.

It lets her live comfortably within her budget and enjoy the simple pleasures of daily life.

Despite the difficulties of getting older and dealing with health issues, Peggy stays determined to live life her way.

She finds great joy living in her home with her dog, feeling secure with her daughter nearby, and a medical alert button for safety.

She remembers past challenges with falling, especially in her previous large home, where she needed walking sticks for support.

Now, she can move freely in her cozy space, relying on nearby surfaces for stability and feeling confident in her environment.

Peggy loves her independence. Making her own decisions holds significant importance, particularly in her older years.

“I’ve always shared a home with somebody, and now this is my home… This is the prime of my life, and I’m living in a tiny house,” she concluded.
