A lost boy who spent the night alone in the wild was found by a hero dog and led to safety

A touching hero dog rescue story has captured widespread attention after Buford, an Anatolian Pyrenees, helped lead a lost toddler to safety in the Arizona wilderness.

The dogโ€™s owner, Scotty Dunton, has received numerous gifts at home as people show appreciation for Buford’s bravery in rescuing young Boden Allen, TODAY noted.

“Toys, chew toys, snacks… just a little bit of everything,” Dunton said.

Overnight search and dangerous terrain

Boden, who went missing from his familyโ€™s home in Seligman, had been outside playing when he disappeared, according to his mother, Sarah.

His father, Cory, mentioned that he was on the roof while his wife, Sarah, cared for their 1-year-old child.

The Yavapai County Sheriffโ€™s Office launched a 40-person overnight search after receiving the missing child report, bringing together multiple law enforcement agencies.

โ€œI didnโ€™t even know how to process,โ€ Sarah said. โ€œI looked at his empty bed in the middle of the night, and Iโ€™m like, โ€˜This isnโ€™t real, heโ€™s not โ€” how is he not here? How is he out by himself somewhere in the dark?โ€™โ€

Public information officer Megan Fitzgerald said crews used various search methods, including teams on foot, off-road vehicles, and helicopters, to cover the rugged terrain as quickly as possible.

The area posed serious risks, with wild animals like bears, coyotes, snakes, and mountain lions common in the region.

During the search, a helicopterโ€™s thermal imaging system picked up two mountain lions nearby, underscoring the danger the missing child had faced.

After a 16-hour search, authorities found a toddler about seven miles from his home on rancher Scottyโ€™s property.

Boden, who had been wearing a blue tank top and pajama pants when he disappeared, was confirmed as the missing child.

The hero dog rescue and its impact

Scotty said Buford found Boden while making his usual rounds on the property.

He believes Buford located the child and stayed by his side, which likely helped guide him to safety.

The boy later said he had spent the night sleeping under a tree.

The hero dog rescue came to light when Dunton spotted Buford sitting near the entrance of the driveway, and standing right next to him was the missing child.

Scotty said he was shocked, adding he couldnโ€™t believe the boy had made it alone.

He added that he immediately recognized the boy because he had already heard reports of the missing child earlier that day.

He explained that Buford is a natural guardian who roams the property at night to keep predators like coyotes away.

He said Buford “likely protected and directed the missing boy to safety.”

While Boden was “upset,” he was “in good shape,” and Scotty expressed relief upon finding him.

Boden and Buford were reunited on April 21.

โ€œI just look at a miracle, and Iโ€™m never going to forget it,” Corey said.

After Bodenโ€™s rescue, Scotty reviewed the tracks to understand his journey, noting that Buford, his dog, was with the child for at least a mile before the trail was lost in the rocks.

On the day of their reunion, Buford was honored as an honorary member of the Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team and received a special blue vest.

John Harris, 4×4 Unit Manager of the team, explained that the success of the search was rewarding, adding that the focus wasnโ€™t on who found the child but on the fact that he was safely located.

Meanwhile, since the hero dog rescue, Scotty revealed that he has received messages from people worldwide, all expressing their admiration and support for his dog’s courageous actions.

A familyโ€™s new mission

Corey said that his family is focused on raising awareness about missing children to prevent similar incidents. He explained that Boden now carries a whistle on his necklace, which he knows how to use in emergencies.

Looking ahead, Corey plans to build illuminated lighthouses in visible areas, with playgrounds and noise-making features to engage children. This project, driven by the community, aims to enhance safety.

Additionally, Corey revealed that whistles will be sold at the lighthouses, with the proceeds supporting the initiative as a tribute to Bodenโ€™s rescue.
