Dog gives birth in back of car immediately after being rescued

This couple adopted one pup from the dog shelter, but they ended up taking home seven!

Rebecca Lynch, the president of Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida, was on a vacation with her husband in Savannah, Georgia. Before returning home, she decided to make one unplanned stop – not in a souvenir shop, but in a dog shelter.

“I know that Georgia has a lot of rural, high-kill shelters and I knew I wanted to save the neediest dog from a shelter before I went home. I had space in my car and wanted to help,” Rebecca told The Dodo.

Rebecca learned about Lizzy, a young terrier at risk of being put down, from a friend living in Georgia. Apparently, someone had dumped the pregnant pup in the shelter.

Much more concerning was the fact that Lizzy was heart-worm positive and that she had a broken leg. That’s when Rebecca realized that she couldn’t let the poor dog suffer anymore.

When they picked Lizzy up from the dog shelter, Rebecca said that she was “very pregnant, afraid and confused”.

So, in order to make the hours-long drive to their home in Florida more comfortable for their new family member, the couple put a bed and blanket in the backseat. Rebecca also sat beside the pooch and petted her softly.

“I knew she was nervous and scared and I just wanted to comfort her on the ride,” she said.

Perhaps it was Rebecca’s reassuring touch or the soft bed, but after some time, Lizzy started going into labor!

“About an hour in, she finally relaxed and rubbed her little head into my hand while I pet her. Once she felt safe and comfortable, she decided it was time.

She started panting and she got restless; I told my husband, ‘I think she’s in labor!’” said Rebecca.

After 20 minutes, Lizzy gave birth to her first puppy. Rebecca served as her midwife, making sure that the dog in labor kept calm and that her babies were safe.

By the time they got to the vet, Lizzy had birthed three puppies into the world.

“She was a pro! We went straight to the vet and they said everything looked good,” Rebecca said.

But just when they thought it was over, Lizzy had another puppy at the vet and two more on the car ride back home!

“It was quite an experience and Lizzy was such an awesome little mommy,” Rebecca said.

We bet she is!

According to Rebecca, the new momma and her six pups will spend a few more days in the vet before she takes them home. They will be fostered until they are ready to find their respective homes.

Despite all that she’s been through, Lizzy has remained a sweetheart.

“Lizzy is a doll. Bless her heart, with all that she’s been through in her short life, she is so loving and trusting,” Rebecca said. “She is a gentle and loving soul. Pretty remarkable.”
