A song from 2011 went viral on YouTube after a group of dancers used it in their dance routine.
“Somebody That I Used to Know” is a popular pop song by Belgian-Australian artist Gotye, whose real name is Wouter ‘Wally’ De Backer, featuring Kimbra from New Zealand.
The song explores coping mechanisms for a breakup, especially when it’s difficult, and how the person you once knew can become a stranger, according to American Songwriter.
It suggests various responses, such as creating distance, avoiding, or attempting to erase their memory.
This sentiment is captured in Gotye’s widely acclaimed song, “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
Gotye wrote, recorded, and produced “Somebody That I Used to Know” for his third album, “Making Mirrors,” released in 2011.

It soared to the top of charts worldwide, including in Australia, the USA, and the UK, becoming the best-selling song of 2012 in those regions, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia noted.
In Australia, it also secured the coveted top spot in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2011, solidifying its status as the most successful Australian track of the 2010s.
The song earned numerous accolades, including ARIA Awards for Single of the Year and Best Video, with Gotye winning Best Male Artist and Producer of the Year and Kimbra named Best Female Artist.
Its success continued at the Grammy Awards 2013, claiming victories for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year.
Born in 1980 in Bruges, Belgium, Gotye moved to Australia with his family when he was two.
They first lived in Sydney before settling in Montmorency, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria.

His mom called him “Gotye,” after the French equivalent of his Dutch name, “Gauthier,” while they used the English version of Walter for school.
Gotye loved music from a young age, playing instruments like piano and drums. He got into music production after being inspired by Depeche Mode’s album “Songs of Faith and Devotion” as a teenager.
He formed a band called Downstares in his teens, but it broke up after high school, said Kiddle.
In 2001, his family moved again, and he attended the University of Melbourne. He lived with friends in a house called “The Frat House,” where they had many parties.
He got a bunch of old records from a neighbor, which sparked his interest in making music as Gotye.
The first “Somebody That I Used to Know” dance routine to go viral on YouTube was from Brent Street Academy 2021, posted on September 2022 and gained over 600,000 views.

Brent Street is an Australian-based performing arts school that offers dance lessons to dancers of all ages and skill levels.
Their dance routine to “Somebody That I Used to Know” was somewhat dramatic. It was recorded on stage with impressive lighting effects.
The group’s contemporary dance used a different version of the song.

Instead of its original electropop genre, the group remixed the song with percussions and some wind and string instruments, perfectly matching their dance moves and the stage settings.
The latest “Somebody That I Used To Know” dance routine was performed by CDK and choreographed by Sergio Reis and Jowha Van de Laak. It was posted in February 2024 and has over 3.6 million views.
