How a couple transformed their super small balcony into a flourishing vegetable garden

A couple has turned their small balcony into a thriving vegetable garden, proving that even limited space can be used to grow fresh produce.

What started as an experiment in limited space has turned into a rewarding project, as they didnโ€™t think growing food without a backyard would be possible.

This compact garden is thriving, proving that even a small area can be transformed into a productive, enjoyable green space.

This season, a small vegetable garden with a few herbs and tomatoes has blossomed into a thriving space.

The couple added more containers, transforming their balcony into a lush, green retreat for relaxation and harvesting.

Over the summer, they grew and harvested a significant amount of food, using succession planting to ensure a continuous supply of fresh crops.

Theyโ€™ve also spotted white butterflies, which they later learned were cabbage moths feeding on the plants.

Each new discovery is helping them understand more about the gardenโ€™s insect visitors.

The couple visits their garden multiple times a day to water the plants, harvest vegetables, check on the flowers, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, particularly during sunset.

Theyโ€™re eager to share how their one-of-a-kind garden has thrived. It includes a range of vegetables, from three varieties of cherry tomatoes and two types of sugar snap peas to leafy greens like kale, beets, and cucumbers.

The couple is growing jalapeรฑo peppers and purple beans for the first time. Summer herbs like parsley, basil, and mint are key to their garden; theyโ€™ve planted plenty of them.

While cilantro and dill went to seed in the heat, they plan to replant them when cooler weather arrives.

Flowers have added a burst of color to the space, with edible nasturtiums providing vibrant blooms and tasty leaves.

They also grow calendula, which is known for its versatility, though they mainly appreciate its beauty.

Marigolds are another key addition, drawing pollinators while enhancing the gardenโ€™s visual appeal.

Covering about 45 square feet (4 square meters), the balcony garden also features a seating area and a storage box for convenience.

The couple finds growing food and caring for plants to be a rewarding experience. They plan to expand their garden even more next season.

For planting, theyโ€™ve chosen three types of containers, with deep rectangular planters being their top choice.

These planters offer plenty of space for roots to grow and help prevent moisture from accumulating, making them ideal for taller vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and peas.

In addition to the rectangular planters, the couple uses shallow window boxes for herbs, lettuce, and radishes.

However, theyโ€™ve found that larger vegetables donโ€™t grow as well in these containers. For example, their kale has barely grown since being transplanted into the window boxes.

They also use round pots for some of their tomatoes, which are easy to move around but unstable in strong winds.

As a result, theyโ€™re considering using these pots only for flowers and smaller plants next year.

With limited space for winter storage, they choose containers that are easy to stack at the end of the season.

The couple prefers lightweight plastic containers over heavier clay or wood, as they are easier to move around for watering, weeding, or weather protection.

To maximize space, they built a few additions. A cedar slat table raises their window boxes, allowing for better sunlight exposure, and fits neatly into an unused corner.

Below the table, two bins store tools, soil, and compost. They also crafted two small cedar stools, which make planting and harvesting more comfortable than kneeling on the patio stones.

Starting their balcony garden has been rewarding yet challenging for the couple.

From experimenting with fertilizers to dealing with pests and setting up an irrigation system, theyโ€™ve learned a lot along the way.

The biggest hurdle has been the weather, as they work to protect their plants from heat waves, heavy rain, and strong winds.

Despite these challenges, gardening has become a shared passion. The couple enjoys learning new skills, reading gardening books, and planning for next season.

Most importantly, they take pride in enjoying fresh, home-grown produce from their food garden.
