Mom captures daughter with Down syndrome’s absolute elation to birthday party invitation

Macy, a 15-year-old with Down syndrome, was overjoyed after receiving a birthday party invite from her classmate, an experience she rarely had.

Her mom, Heather Avis, was surprised and hoped the video of Macy’s happiness would inspire more kindness in others.

Heather Avis, Macy’s mom, says Macy has been invited to so few birthday parties since kindergarten that she can count them on one hand.

“Yesterday Macy got in the car and showed me an invitation to a birthday party for a friend at school who is also in the life skills program,” Heather said in an Instagram post.

On May 30, Heather shared an update about the birthday party Macy attended.

In the video, Macy is seen laughing and clapping, and even though she doesn’t say much, her body language shows how happy she is.

Meanwhile, Heather noted that the birthday boy, a disabled student, gave birthday party invites to disabled and non-disabled peers to his party, reflecting true inclusivity.

She suggests that individuals like Macy and the birthday boy, often excluded, understand how to include others.

Heather hopes Macy’s experience will inspire others to embrace those who are often excluded.

“We all have opportunity to be the person to say, ‘I’m going to create a space where everyone can belong,” she says.

Why inclusion is important?

Inclusion means that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of life based on their abilities and wishes, according to All Kids Bike.

It involves social inclusion, which is crucial for a fair society.

Inclusion helps create a space where everyone’s differences are accepted, allowing everyone to succeed and contribute.

It supports the idea that everyone has the right to fully participate in life.

Meanwhile, social isolation occurs when someone feels they don’t belong and lack meaningful connections, leading to serious health issues.

It involves both physical solitude and emotional disconnection.

People with disabilities are more at risk due to barriers like inaccessibility, communication challenges, and stigma, which can harm their self-esteem, social activities, and quality of life.

Social isolation can lead to loneliness, depression, and anxiety. It also raises the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and weakens the immune system.

Adults with disabilities are three times more likely to feel very lonely than those without disabilities.

Social isolation can lead to persistent loneliness, increased irritability, and lack of interest or motivation.

Recognizing these signs is crucial for providing support and creating a more inclusive environment for those experiencing isolation.

Diversity and inclusion are crucial nowadays, and disability inclusion is significant.

It’s not just about compliance but recognizing the value and abilities of every individual, especially those with disabilities.
