An Ohio teen hero is praised for bravely rescuing a family from a house fire.

According to Cleveland Fire and Rescue’s X posts, the incident unfolded around 11 a.m. near West 140th Street and Sacramento Avenue in Cleveland.

Tyler quickly grabbed a ladder from his home, placed it against the burning house, and assisted a woman with her two young children to safety.

By the time firefighters arrived, the family had already evacuated. The woman, her children, and a 12-year-old boy who had jumped from the back of the house were treated for minor injuries at MetroHealth.

The fire also spread to a nearby home, but two police officers, who saw the flames during their lunch break, rescued an elderly man and his dog.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, though one firefighter sustained a shoulder injury and is in stable condition.

“I was in my house, and I heard screaming,” Sowden told Cleveland 19. “I’d seen the kid on top of the roof. The house was on fire. I took a ladder, ran over, put the ladder up, grabbed the kids and helped the mom down the ladder.”

“I wasn’t thinking, I just took the ladder and ran,” the Ohio teen hero recalled.

Tyler’s stepfather, Matt Stamber, praised Tyler for his quick and selfless actions during the fire. Matt, who was not at home then, described how Tyler risked his own safety to help others, putting their lives ahead of his own.

He commended Tyler for knowing exactly what needed to be done and acting without hesitation, expressing how proud he was of Tyler’s bravery.

“He valued other people’s lives more than his own at the time, to just do what he needed to do. He knew what needed to be done, and he did it. I’m so proud of this boy,” he said.

Many are impressed by how Tyler, a 10th grader at Old Brook High School in Old Brooklyn, acted swiftly and decisively in the face of danger, climbing up and down the ladder before the house was fully engulfed in flames, according to Fox8.

Tyler’s experience working in construction with his stepfather was key to his quick response. He feels that he was in the right place at the right time.

Earlier that day, the Ohio teen hero had been working with a ladder and never expected he would soon use those skills to help save lives in such a critical moment.

He didn’t fully grasp the significance of his actions until the family he helped asked to meet him.

Although a language barrier existed, Tyler could feel their gratitude through their emotions.

The boy, who had jumped from the second-story window, was an interpreter to express the family’s thanks.

Tyler recalled how the father hugged him several times, and the emotional moment nearly brought him to tears.

Lieutenant Mike Norman, a public information officer with the Division of Fire, also commended Tyler for his heroic actions, calling it “amazing” that he saved lives.

“He was heroic this morning. I give him a lot of credit,” Lieutenant Norman said.

Lieutenant Norman highlighted Tyler’s quick thinking, particularly his decision to bring the right ladder to the scene and help the woman and her children escape safely.

While he acknowledged that the firefighters were well-trained, the officer emphasized how extraordinary it was for someone so young to act with such courage.
