A secret millionaire lived quietly among the people of Hinsdale, though few would have suspected it. Geoffrey Holt, known for riding his bright-orange lawn mower along the roads of Hinsdale, N.H., kept to himself and lived modestly in a mobile home.
Many saw him as a quiet, unassuming man who preferred solitude and frugality. But after Geoffrey passed away at 82, the town learned of his hidden wealth.
Following his death, officials revealed that he had left nearly his entire fortune—about $3.8 million, earned through investments—to Hinsdale.
The unexpected gift turned the town’s most inconspicuous resident into its greatest benefactor, leaving behind a story as extraordinary as it was heartwarming.
“I just immediately think, that’s that story that you hear all the time,” Kathryn Lynch, Hinsdale’s administrator, told The Washington Post. “The millionaire next door. Somebody that you would never, never think.”
Originally from Indianapolis, Geoffrey moved to Hinsdale in the 1960s. He later settled in a mobile home park owned by his close friend, Edwin “Smokey” Smith.
Before retiring, Geoffrey worked as a teacher and in a grain mill. After moving to the park, Smith hired him as a handyman.
Their friendship grew slowly, with conversations exchanged from their doorsteps. Geoffrey, who was shy by nature, took time to open up.
Despite his quiet demeanor, he had a deep passion for automobile history. He was an avid collector of die-cast cars and model trains.
He set up detailed train tracks inside his mobile home and nearby shed. He displayed his car collection on shelves and furniture.
“He was so proud of it,” Edwin said. “You’d ask him, ‘What year car is this?’… and he would tell you what year it was, and why it was made the way it was.”
Many in Hinsdale never saw Geoffrey’s hidden interests, as he lived quietly and stayed out of the spotlight.
Aside from his collections, he led a simple life. As he grew older, health issues and the loss of his partner in 2017 made him even more reclusive.
Geoffrey, the secret millionaire, spent much of his time at home, working on model cars or riding his lawnmower through the mobile home park.
He often stopped by the roadside or near a brook. Despite owning an old car, he preferred using his mower to go to the nearby Walmart when he needed to shop.
Alison Holt, his sister, described her brother as humble and quiet, a trait he carried since childhood.
Alison said her brother, Geoffrey, believed in staying out of the spotlight, telling her his philosophy was to avoid standing out to prevent criticism.
Despite his unassuming nature, Geoffrey had the financial ability to change his life. He had made smart investments early on, which grew into millions. However, he rarely touched his account, using the money only for taxes.
His simple lifestyle may have seemed odd to others, but to his friend Smith, it made sense. Geoffrey valued his independence and found comfort in his routine.
“He liked his world, and he liked to be in charge of it,” Smith said. “And by keeping it small, he was.”

The foundation would manage the funds and distribute grants to the town. Edwin informed the town administrator in September, shocked by the unexpected gift.
“You feel like you’ve won the lottery,” Kathryn told The Post.
The news of Geoffrey’s generous gift surprised many in Hinsdale, including Steven Diorio, the chairman of the town’s Board of Selectmen, who had often waved to Geoffrey while he was on his mower, unaware of his wealth.
The donation, which will benefit education, recreation, health, and cultural programs, is expected to significantly impact the town, which is not wealthy.
Town officials are still discussing how to use the money. Suggestions include purchasing an electronic ballot machine to honor Geoffrey’s commitment to voting and naming something in his memory.
Geoffrey’s story has gained attention beyond Hinsdale, with coverage from several news oulets.
The question now is how Geoffrey would feel about all the attention he’s receiving.
“It would embarrass him, I think,” Edwin said. “… But he would be happy that people are appreciating what he’s done.”
