This dad gave an epic wedding speech with a musical tribute to the newlyweds

The father of the groom usually doesn’t give speeches at weddings, but Jake Miller’s dad’s wedding speech recently went viral on TikTok.

He turned his speech into a musical performance dedicated to the newlyweds.

Bruce Miller, a pediatric ophthalmologist in Weston, Florida, lives by the motto, “Music is my life.”

Having played in a band during medical school, he shares a musical bond with his familyโ€”his daughter and wife love to sing, and his son, Jake Miller, is a professional musician.

When it was Bruce’s turn to give a toast at Jake and Brandi’s wedding, he surprised everyone by singing a special song parody just for them.

A clip of his performance, filmed by Wild & Roam and posted by Jake on TikTok, has garnered over two million views.

Bruce came up with the idea after seeing a wedding where the groom’s dad sang “Piano Man.” He asked Jake and Brandi if he could do something similar at their wedding, and they said yes.

A year before his son Jake’s June wedding to Brandi, 61-year-old Bruce Miller, a self-described 70s rock fan, hatched a secret plan.

Inspired by the Looking Glass hit “Brandy,” Bruce decided to rewrite the lyrics to create a personalized song for the couple.

Bruce then contacted a local producer who had worked with Jake, recorded the song in the studio, and left with an MP3 file. He used the file to practice and memorize the song while driving.

“I wanted to do it right,” he told TODAY.

Bruce was emotional as he gave his speech at the Santa Barbara wedding. He had recently been in the hospital with kidney problems.

“I wasn’t sure I would even make it to the wedding,” he says. “I was so overwhelmed and grateful.”

Bruce teased the crowd after the heartfelt dad’s wedding speech, saying, “Oh yeah, and one more thing…” before launching into his song.

The 31-year-old groom said he’s not surprised by his dad’s efforts.

“That’s just who he is,” Jake says, adding that his love for music was inspired by his dad, who played Bruce Springsteen and the Eagles at home and taught him to play drums when he was 8.

“My friends think he’s the cool and funny dad,” he said.

Jake told PEOPLE that only his mom and sister knew about the surprise. When the song started, he thought his dad would sing “Brandy” because of his wife’s name.

But then his dad changed the lyrics to make them his own.

It was a really funny surprise, according to Jake. He watched the videos a few times to catch all the clever changes. It perfectly showed who his dad is.

Brandi also loved it. Jake said she probably had a feeling his dad would do something special. They both thought the performance was amazing.

The video won the hearts of the bride, groom, their guests, and the internet, earning over one million views since it was posted on June 10. It also received more than 62,000 likes and over 3,500 comments.

People praised the dad for his performance, with comments like, “Absolutely the best!” and “OMG so sweet! Imma cry!” Many also applauded him for making his son and daughter-in-law smile, saying things like, “Love itโ€ฆ you go, Dad!”

Despite living apart, Brandi, a speech pathologist, and Jake Miller started dating in August 2019.

During the pandemic, they moved in with Jake’s family in Florida. Jake realized Brandi was the one because she got along well with his family.

“We knew from the beginning … Brandi brought out Jake’s best and happiest version of himself,” Bruce said.
