A heartwarming snowstorm act of kindness unfolded during Winter Storm Fern when 10-year-old Helaina Hayduk of Manheim, Pennsylvania, went outside with a shovel to earn money for her brother’s birthday gift.
While many stayed indoors to stay warm, Helaina faced the cold with one clear goal: making Grayson’s 13th birthday special.
Her dedication to this mission showed how much she cared.
Helaina worked through the snow and wind, determined to complete her task. Her hard work and kindness paid off — she earned enough for the birthday present and captured the attention of her local community.
Soon, her story was featured on the local news, highlighting her generosity and determination.
A family supporting kindness
Helaina lives with her parents, Lenora, 45, and Shawn, 47, and her two brothers, Lucas, 16, and Grayson, according to PEOPLE.
The children have been homeschooled by their mother for the past five years, which has brought them closer together.
When Winter Storm Fern hit over the weekend, snow quickly piled up in the neighborhood.
Shawn, who works as a mailman, suggested the children help neighbors by shoveling snow.
This simple idea sparked a snowstorm of acts of kindness that would touch the entire community.
Choosing to take action
Helaina eagerly agreed. She wanted to make sure her brother’s birthday was memorable. However, her older brothers decided not to join her outside in the cold.
“I wanted to do it, but my dad was saying splitting it three ways wouldn’t be as good [a] profit,” Helaina explained.
Because she worked alone, Helaina was able to keep more of the money she earned. She stayed positive despite the chilly conditions.
“I got the upside to everything,” she said.
Helaina is no stranger to hard work. She often bakes brownies during warmer months and sells them outside her home.
Last year, she used that money to buy Christmas gifts for her family, but after the holidays, she needed a new way to fund Grayson’s gift.
A snowstorm act of kindness in the neighborhood
To help spread the word, Shawn posted on social media that Helaina was available to shovel snow.
Soon, four neighbors asked for help. As Helaina worked, WGAL came to cover her story, recognizing her act of kindness during the snowstorm on camera.
Shawn shared with the station that his daughter loves giving to others.
“Her love language is gift-giving, so she absolutely enjoys doing it and buying gifts for people,” he said.
The work was not easy. The snow had frozen into thick ice, making every task challenging.
Helaina explained her process: “So we had to chip at it, and then I stabbed it, and then I had to scoop it up.”
Making a difference with every shovel
The neighbors were grateful for Helaina’s help and paid her what they felt was fair.
One elderly couple could not shovel their driveway due to back pain. Helaina and her father cleared it for them.
“So, then we did it, and then they really liked it,” Helaina said.
By the end of her efforts, Helaina took home more than $100, enough to buy the perfect gift for Grayson’s birthday.

For her parents, the snowstorm act of kindness was a proud moment.
“She is such a light,” Lenora said. “I’m just so proud of her.”
Even though Helaina dreams of becoming an artist, her mother believes her kind heart will always guide her actions.
Lenora wanted her daughter to understand the impact of small acts of love.
“In a world where everything seems to be dark these days,” Lenora said, “it’s so nice to show love towards other people.”
Through her snowstorm act of kindness, Helaina showed that even a young child can make a big difference.
She not only celebrated her brother’s birthday but also brought warmth and hope to her entire community during a harsh winter storm.
