Vanessa has transformed her desert homestead into more than just a home—a sprawling sanctuary for rescued animals.
The property spans a vast area and houses a variety of creatures that freely roam.
Among the unique living spaces are a cozy “barndominium” created from a re
purposed barn, a vibrant multi-level tower tiny home, and a floating home ingeniously made from a shipping container.
Vanessa walks us through these different accommodations designed to offer guests an immersive sanctuary experience.
Income from these rentals goes directly towards caring for the animals and maintaining the homestead.
The genesis of a desert homestead dream
Vanessa’s journey to building her extraordinary desert homestead began unexpectedly.
She recalls, “We were in LA the year that the pandemic broke out, and we just threw everything we had into a car and we got a little homestead cabin out in the middle of nowhere.”
Initially, it was meant to be a temporary escape, but the desert quickly became home.
“Eventually, you know, we had to admit that oh, I guess we’re desert people now. This is our home,” she says.
What started as a simple cabin soon evolved into Kaleidoscope Desert, a one-of-a-kind sanctuary shaped by creativity, hard work, and a deep connection to the land.
Today, this desert homestead stands as a testament to transformation and adaptability.
Restoring the antique barn: A desert homestead revival
One of the first major projects on the desert homestead was restoring an antique barn from the 1940s. The structure originally had no windows and only basic barn doors.
Vanessa and her team carefully preserved its historical charm while making it livable.
“We kept all the original tin and the original roof while we renovated it and then we put that back on, keeping it true to what it was before,” she explains.
The barn is a comfortable home with unique features, including a kitchen filled with vintage finds, a bathroom decorated with reclaimed mirrors and a brass sink, and a bedroom centered around a custom-built bed and a freestanding bathtub.
The kitchen, assembled from estate and yard sale treasures, features a retro microwave and a repurposed work table.
With its rustic tin details and numerous mirrors, the bathroom adds an eclectic charm.
The bedroom, highlighted by an art deco screen and a view of the San Jacinto mountains, features a dramatic bathtub as its centerpiece.
Vanessa enjoys curating this space with unexpected objects.
“I get to find the like weirdest objects and then put them in. Like it would be hard to make it work in my own house where I’m like woo, that’s a lot, but here I’m like yeah, it’s a lot, it’s great. I love that old thing.”
The iridescent star tower: A whimsical desert homestead retreat
Another feature of the desert homestead is the Iridescent Star Tower. This multi-level tiny home embodies Vanessa’s artistic vision.
The structure includes an outdoor kitchen on the porch, where resident peacocks often roam.
Iridescent panels give the tower a dazzling effect as the sunlight hits, adding to its dreamlike appeal.
Artist Shrine played a key role in painting the structure, and as Vanessa recalls, “He loved like this color gold is amazing and he was like, who doesn’t want to walk through a gold door?”
The tower features a bunk bed sleeping area and a bathroom on the upper level.
The unique layout requires guests to walk through the shower to reach the bathroom, which offers a stunning 270-degree view of the desert.
This innovative use of space reflects the desert homestead’s overall philosophy—blending function with artistic expression.
The floating container: Modern minimalism in the desert
A striking contrast to the barn and tower, the floating container home brings a sleek, modern element to the desert homestead.
Designed as a prototype for a container hotel, the exterior is mirrored to create the illusion of floating.
The space is thoughtfully designed with a kitchenette featuring an induction stove, a convection oven from Japan, and a water filtration system.
Despite its compact size, the bathroom is fully functional and efficient.
The bedroom, equipped with a queen bed, is designed to maximize space, with a mirror reflecting the desert landscape to create an open feel.
A mini-split system ensures year-round comfort, while a small on-site store offers guests unique merchandise, including emu-themed items.
The seating area provides breathtaking views of the San Jacinto mountains, making this modern home a serene retreat within the desert homestead.
A sanctuary for all: Rescuing and rehoming
Beyond its creative accommodations, the desert homestead is a haven for rescued animals.
The sanctuary was not part of the original plan but grew naturally over time.
“It very very organically rolled out,” Vanessa explains.
Her rescue efforts began in New York City with dogs. They later expanded to include a variety of animals, starting with a pig named Big Pig.
Many animals arrived when their owners could no longer care for them.
Today, the sanctuary is home to many animals, including Rubs the zebra, mini horses, emus, and numerous pigs.
Each animal has its own personality and story. Dudu, a feisty pig, enjoys her own bed and has a secret friendship with Pink Pig.
The pigs—Charlie Brown, Jupiter, and Nice Pig—love belly rubs and companionship. Emus Later and Later Jr. have also become beloved residents.
The desert homestead has become a place of refuge and care for these animals, ensuring a safe and loving environment.
Sustaining the dream: Funding and future plans
The desert homestead operates as a nonprofit, with all proceeds from guest stays, tours, and merchandise sales going directly toward animal care and property maintenance.
“All the money that comes in through the stays, through the tours, through the merchandise and so forth all fund the nonprofit that supports the animal rescue,” Vanessa explains.
Every visit helps expand the sanctuary and provide for more animals in need.
Looking ahead, Vanessa sees the desert homestead as a limitless creative space.
“I feel like the desert is an amazing large canvas and you could create here endlessly,” she says.
Current projects include building a community center where guests can gather and connect.
Though the work never stops, Vanessa and her team remain dedicated to their mission.
“To say we’re busy is an understatement. We never stop and we never get a break and we never get a vacation, but it doesn’t matter that much in the end because we love what we’re doing.”
