Jimmy’s brother, Carl Rush, said the family often talked about whether their father might live long enough for one of them to finally claim it.
“We felt like our dad was going to make it to 100 because he’s in great health. We’ve been talking about it as a family for 25, 30 years,” Carl said.
When Jimmy and his father arrived at the restaurant to celebrate the birthday, the family became curious about something else.

“We’d asked the bartender had anyone else did it? No one had,” Jimmy said. “So we said, ‘We’ll be the first.”

Jimmy’s father, Jim Rush, played the most important role in making the 80-year-old oyster deal possible.
At 99 years old, Jim remains in good health.
He is also a veteran who served in both World War II and the Korean War.
Despite being close to 100 years old, Jim said he takes no medication. The only issue he mentioned was that his eyesight is not as strong as it once was.
When asked what helped him live such a long life, Jim pointed to his faith.
“I’ve been very lucky and very well taken care of through my God,” Jim said. “It worked out.”
His long life made it possible for his son to finally complete the rare 80-year-old oyster deal, something the family had talked about for decades.
The Rush family hopes to complete the 80-year-old oyster deal again
The story of the 80-year-old oyster deal may not end with Jimmy.
His brother Carl is already thinking about the future.
Carl will turn 80 in October of 2028. If the family returns to the restaurant, their father, Jim, would be 102 years old.
Carl believes it could still happen.
“We will be back to do this all over again October of 2028 when I turn 80,” Carl told the station. “My dad says he’s going to make it, so that’s good enough for me.”
If that day comes, the Rush family could once again make history at Wintzell’s Oyster House.
For now, they remain the only family known to have completed the 80-year-old oyster deal, turning a restaurant sign that many people once laughed at into a real moment that took nearly a century to happen.
