She sold her home, faced grief, and then found healing, and joy living tiny and traveling

Tiny home living in an Airstream became Sherryโ€™s bold answer to starting over at almost 60.

โ€œAt almost age 60, I said no to society’s norms, and I took this huge leap of faith and traveled across the country.โ€ she said.

Instead of settling into a quiet retirement, she sold her townhouse in 2023 and hit the road with her Jeep Wrangler.

For two months, she slept in the back of her Jeep, testing what life on the move might feel like.

She remembers thinking, โ€œI’m ready to be a nomad. I’m so excited.โ€

Then tragedy struck. Her mother suddenly passed away from COVID. The loss stopped her plans.

She spent 16 months healingโ€”mentally, physically, and spirituallyโ€”before she felt ready to travel again.

In 2025, when her lease ended, she purchased an Airstream Basecamp 20X and officially began her journey.

Nearly a year later, she says, โ€œIt’s been an incredible journey. It really has.โ€

Why she chose tiny home living in an Airstream after loss

For Sherry, this lifestyle was not just about travel. It was about freedom and growth.

She had never towed anything before. The first time she pulled her trailer down the road, emotion overwhelmed her.

โ€œI wasn’t crying because I was scared, but I was crying because I’m doing this. Oh my gosh, I’m doing this!โ€

That moment marked the start of a new chapter. Today, she says she is not the same woman she was the year before.

She now mentors other women as a life and empowerment coach, guiding them to step outside their comfort zones.

โ€œWhen you put yourself out of your comfort zone and you start doing things that you’ve never done before, you’re going to grow in ways you never ever imagined.โ€

Inside her Airstream Basecamp 20x: Size, features, and costs

Sherry lives in an Airstream Basecamp 20X, an approximately 20-foot travel trailer built for off-road adventures and boondocking.

The model is one of the larger Basecamp layouts and is designed for durability and compact comfort.

Basecamp models typically range from $58,000 to $85,000. She said she secured hers through a collaboration at a lower cost.

She also traded in her Jeep Wrangler for another Jeep at an affordable price and is close to paying it off.

Her monthly expenses are steady and predictable:

  • Around $200 per month for gas
  • About $69 per month for RV insurance
  • Roughly $2,000 total monthly living expenses

โ€œI figured I’m gonna have to pay rent or a house payment somewhere, so why not have it on the road?โ€ she explained.

She encourages others to write down their current monthly expenses before making a leap. For her, costs are similar to what she paid for a townhouse without HOA fees.

Tiny home living in an Airstream: The kitchen that changed her mindset

The galley kitchen is compact but efficient. Once used to large kitchensโ€”including one in a 10-room farmhouseโ€”she had to adjust.

โ€œThis is a tiny home kitchen; it took some adjusting to get used to,โ€ she said.

The kitchen includes:

  • A propane stovetop
  • Circular sink
  • 23-gallon fresh water tank with monitor
  • Water filtration system
  • Refrigerator with freezer
  • Microwave (used when connected to shore power)
  • EcoFlow power station for off-grid electricity
  • Two small pantry storage areas

She keeps appliances tucked away to maintain a clean, minimalist look. Water from the 23-gallon tank supplies the sink and bathroom, and she carefully monitors usage.

โ€œThatโ€™s the one thing about tiny home living: you have to purge,โ€ she said. โ€œBut you find out you can make do with so little.โ€

She stores bamboo utensils under the counter and keeps handmade pottery crafted by her daughter, a ceramic artist now living in Germany.

The pieces bring comfort and connection to her travels.

The living room: A cozy front lounge

At the front of the trailer is her favorite hangout spot. The original dinette layout was converted into a sofa-style seating area.

โ€œThis is my hangout spot. I work here, I chill here.โ€

Large front windows allow natural light to fill the space. She can seat up to four people comfortably.

For Sherry, having a cozy place separate from the bed is essential.

โ€œYou’ve got to have a space where you can come that’s comfy and cozy.โ€

Tiny home living in an Airstream: Bathroom, bedroom, and smart storage

The bathroom is a wet bath, meaning the toilet and shower share one waterproof space. It also includes a small ventilation window.

โ€œWhen you take a shower, you got to take like a military shower,โ€ she said.

Because her freshwater tank holds only 23 gallons, she conserves water.

She often sponge bathes, uses wipes daily, and relies on dry shampoo while boondocking in remote deserts and mountains.

โ€œYou learn to just embrace your feral self.โ€

In the back of the trailer is her full-size bed. Originally, the space was set up as twin benches with a table insert.

After winning an RV mattress, she converted it permanently into a full bed.

โ€œDo you want to tear down your bed and put it back together every single day? I didn’t want to do that.โ€

She also created a small reading nook near the rear hatchโ€”an added space where she works, reads, rests, and enjoys the view.

Storage is simple but intentional. Clothes are kept in cubbies inside compression bags. Bulky jackets and fleece are rolled and stored overhead.

โ€œIs it worth it not having a big old closet? 100% worth it.โ€

For her, less space means fewer distractions and more time outdoors.

What tiny home living in an Airstream taught her

Today, Sherry describes herself as confident and transformed. The road pushed her beyond fear and into growth.

She said that sheโ€™s not the same woman as she was a year ago.

Her story shows that Tiny home living in an Airstream is not just about downsizing. It is about choosing courage, letting go of excess, and stepping into something new.

For Sherry, the Silver Mermaid is more than a 20-foot trailer. It is proof that reinvention can happen at any ageโ€”and that sometimes, the smallest homes hold the biggest changes.
