Teen hailed a hero when he rescued a woman from her submerged car in Michigan lake

A teen becomes a local hero after saving a woman inside a car submerged in a Michigan lake.

On July 23, a 15-year-old boy, John Agnello, was fishing with his mom near Lakefront Marina when he saw a car plunge into Lake St. Clair.

Without hesitation, he and another person jumped into the water to rescue the woman inside.

“I just see a car just got flying in the air. It was about 15 yards into the water already โ€” that far,” John told WXYZ 7.

John said the car was mostly underwater, so he had to reach through a window to pull the woman out as the door wouldn’t open.

After saving the woman, John dove back into the water to check the car for other people. Luckily, no one else was inside.

“The only part that kind of scared me was I was under the water inside the car because I was feeling around in there,” John said. “It kind of got hard to get out but everything was fine.”

John’s mom, Beth Agnello, called 911 while he was rescuing the woman. She’s thrilled people call him a hero but wants him to stay grounded and think about his future.

John Agnello, the teen hero, says he likes helping people and isn’t sure if he wants to be a first responder someday.

He thinks his family taught him to help others. Police in St. Clair Shores are trying to determine why the car entered the water.

Meanwhile, the driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

John’s dad also got credit for helping him get in shape and be ready for anything, per Michigan News Source.

His mom, Beth, said his dad is great at helping him get fit. She said their family works as a team to teach John how to be a good person.

Reflecting on the event, John hoped that others would act in times of crisis. He wished that people saw what happened and would do the same thing.

In another heroic event on the same day that teen hero John Agnello saved a woman from her submerged car, two women and a group of 13-year-olds rescued two men after their boat exploded and caught fire on Lake Michigan.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit arrived to find a 25-foot fiberglass boat burning, according to CBS News.

“Sheriff’s Marine Unit Deputies responded to North Point Marina and launched their Lake Michigan Patrol Boat,” officials said.

Before they arrived, a good Samaritan took the two men from the boatโ€”a 46-year-old from Washington and a 55-year-old from Franklin Parkโ€”to shore.

Tonia Logan was with seven 13-year-olds on her boat when they saw the explosion and two men in the water. She told the kids to wear life jackets and drove the boat to help.

“We see [the two men] in the water, and we can see they are severely injured โ€“ definite burns โ€“ but we did not know anything else,” Tonia, who called 911, said.

She added that the men were floating on a piece of board, and they didn’t know the extent of their injuries. They were in shock and in a lot of pain.

Logan and her crew pulled the injured men onto their boat. A passenger, Cindy Owen, told WGN-TV that one of the men said they had just filled their boat with 40 gallons of gas before it blew up.

“They were actually wearing life jackets, and they were holding on to a piece of their boat,” said Cindy Owen, per the outlet. “Tonia got the boat really close to them, and then they just swam up to our ladder and climbed aboard.”

The burning boat sank an hour and a half later. The two men were badly hurt but have gotten out of the hospital.

Police are looking into what happened. Tonia said she was really proud of the kids and thankful they were there to help.
