Erin, a teacher searching for affordable living solutions, once thought homeownership was impossible. However, that changed when she embraced tiny home living.
Her 399-square-foot home includes full-size appliances, ample storage, and a cozy loftโall while dramatically cutting costs compared to traditional housing.

From apartment to affordable living solutions
Erin’s journey to homeownership began a year ago when she lived in an apartment in Austin, Texas.
Facing the city’s high housing costs, she struggled to find a permanent and affordable living solution.

As an educator, she doubted she could ever own a home. “As a single person, an educator, I didn’t think homeownership was going to really be in the cards for me,” she said.
However, her mother had planted the idea of a tiny home years earlier, recognizing its affordability.
When Erin saw an advertisement for a tiny home community in Austin, she explored the option.

“I came in, toured them, and just fell in love with the community, but also just like the tiny home itself,” she recalled.
That decision began her transition to a more sustainable lifestyle built on affordable solutions.
Maximizing space: Affordable living solutions in a 399-square-foot home

Despite its compact size, Erin’s tiny home feels surprisingly spacious.
With 11-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and double doors leading to a patio, the 399-square-foot space appears much larger than it is.
“Right when you walk in, it looks really spacious,” Erin noted. “It looks like you’re in something much bigger than 399 ft.”
The living area is designed for both comfort and functionality. A longer-than-usual love seat accommodates multiple guests, while an extra chair and bar stools offer additional seating.

The pine plank ceilings warm the space, creating an inviting atmosphere.
“The living room is both spacious and cozy,” she said. “It’s a great place to gather with friends or just cuddle on the couch and read a book, watch TV, that kind of thing.”
The heart of the home: A functional kitchen for affordable living solutions
The open-concept design connects the kitchen to the living area, making it ideal for entertaining.

“One of the reasons I picked this model again was because of the open space that goes from kitchen to living room that we were just in,” Erin explained.
The kitchen features full-size appliances, including a microwave, oven, stove, and refrigerator.
While some tiny homeowners remove the dishwasher for extra cabinet space, Erin chose to keep it, prioritizing convenience.

Open shelving showcases decorative items, while practical storage solutions, such as a pantry and spice racks, are tucked under the stairs.
“Really, there’s nothing that I would change there as far as the model that I picked and all of those things because of the openness, and I don’t feel like I can’t cook,” she said.
Adjusting to limited storage required a shift in shopping habits, focusing on essentials rather than impulse purchasesโa key aspect of affordable living solutions.

Comfort and convenience: Bathroom and bedroom
Erin’s tiny home is designed for efficiency without sacrificing comfort.
The bathroom features a full-size shower with glass doors, a large vanity, and ample storage.

A pocket door saves space, while a regular-size stackable washer and dryer add convenience.
“Not all tiny homes are able to fit a washer and dryer,” Erin said. “One of the many things that I love about my particular home is that there is the space for that.”
The bedroom, though compact, feels open thanks to vaulted ceilings and natural light. Erin opted for a full-size bed instead of a queen for more walking space.

Built-in closets with barn doors and a dresser provide plenty of storage.
“There really is like everything that I might have in a regular-size bedroom,” she said.
An enclosed patio off the bedroom serves as a peaceful retreat, perfect for morning coffee or relaxation.

Financial freedom: The affordability factor
One of the biggest advantages of Erin’s tiny home is its affordability.
She purchased it for $143,000, with a lot rent of $750 per monthโcomparable to Austin’s apartment prices. This setup allows her to own a home while keeping costs manageable.
“It’s something that’s really doable on a single income, which makes tiny home living really attractive and doable for someone like me,” Erin said.

Lower utility bills, averaging $100 per month, and the absence of property taxes further enhance affordability.
“Price of housing just continues to go up in the Austin area. 3 to 400,000 is the least expensive that you could get a decent property,” she explained.
Erin sees tiny homes as a viable solution to rising housing costs.
“When in fact, it could be like an answer to a lot of our housing problems when housing prices are skyrocketing.”

The loft and beyond: Expanding the living space
Beyond the main living area, Erin’s home features a loft, providing extra storage and guest accommodations.
“The loft is really a great place for me to store things that I still want to have even though I live in a tiny home,” she said.
The additional space challenges the misconception that tiny home living means sacrificing comfort.

“A lot of times I think people think living in a tiny home it’s just going to be this like one little box and you’re always in the same space as everyone else,” she said. “But as you can see, I have multiple spaces to be in.”
For Erin, tiny home living represents more than an affordable housing optionโa pathway to financial independence and homeownership.
“You shouldn’t be able to not own a house just because you’ve chosen a career that isn’t going to make a bunch of money but it’s still really important,” she said. “We have to have educators, we have to have counselorsโthose careers are important, and those people have to have a place to call their own too.”

Ultimately, her home provides more than just shelterโit offers stability, flexibility, and a sense of ownership.
“I have the benefit of having a house that I can take with me wherever I need to go, and you can’t do that with a regular house. That’s a huge benefit too.”
