Sebastian Steudtner has once again made surfing history, conquering a nearly 100-foot world record wave.
In February 2024, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner rode a massive 93.73-foot (28.57-meter) wave, setting a new milestone in world record wave surfing.
This ride broke his record of 86.4 feet from 2020, further solidifying his status as one of the sport’s top athletes.
His 2020 achievement took nearly two years for Guinness to verify, with officials officially recognizing it on May 24, 2022, after an extensive review process.

Wave measurement technology is rapidly improving thanks to innovations.
Working with Team Steudtner, Porsche Engineering is developing advanced drone technology to make wave measurements more accurate.
By capturing multiple angles and using sophisticated calculation tools, this system could speed up the process and provide real-time data with greater precision.

“German big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner has surfed the possibly biggest wave ever measured at 28.57 meters (93.73ft) in Nazaré, Portugal,” says Porsche’s press release.
It added that the wave’s height was measured using advanced drone technology created by Porsche Engineering and Team Steudtner.
However, the record has yet to be officially confirmed.
Sebastian’s world record wave from February 24, 2024, in Nazaré, Portugal, could mark a new chapter in big-wave surfing.

On the same day, he and fellow surfer Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca tackled waves that some believe may have set new records.
While Sebastian still holds the Guinness title for the largest wave surfed—an 86-foot ride from October 2020—many suspect that this recent session saw waves exceeding 100 feet.
Some even believe they could be larger than Porsche Engineering’s estimates, leaving the surfing world eagerly awaiting official verification.
Sebastian expressed his gratitude for Porsche’s partnership over the past three years, highlighting their collaborative efforts in pushing the sport forward.

He acknowledged Porsche’s support in helping him push the limits of big-wave surfing.
Their partnership, he said, has not only advanced the sport but also allowed him to turn his lifelong dream into reality.
Mission Wave Alpha: Sebastian Steudtner’s project to improve surfing sport
Sebastian Steudtner has dedicated the past few years to Nazaré as part of his Mission Wave Alpha project, working with partners such as Porsche, Porsche Engineering, Deutsche Vermögensberatung, Schaeffler, O2 Germany, and X-BIONIC.
His mission is to push the boundaries of big-wave surfing by conquering massive swells and improving water safety, board technology, and overall performance.

Deniz Keskin, Porsche’s Director of Partnerships and Brand Management, highlighted the importance of Steudtner’s latest achievement. He noted that riding a potential world record wave on the Caçador RS board marked the high point of their three-year collaboration.
Deniz also emphasized that Porsche sees itself as more than just a sponsor; it plays an active role in advancing the sport through innovation and technology.
Sebastian has spent the past three years working with Porsche Engineering and Schaeffler to push the limits of surfboard technology, refining every detail to enhance performance.
The team has successfully reduced water and air resistance using cutting-edge simulations and wind tunnel testing, allowing for greater speed and control.
The result is the Caçador RS board, which enables Steudtner to reach speeds up to 100 km/h—an upgrade from the previous 80 km/h.

This extra speed is critical for riding massive waves, as surfers must stay ahead of the wave’s powerful break.
This technological breakthrough was a key factor in helping Sebastian take on what could be a new world record wave.
“Big wave surfing is a beautiful sport; I love it and I am very proud to be able to bring it to the next level through the development of safety and technology and by believing in my dream,” says Sebastian.
Supported by a team that thrives on pushing boundaries, he continues to redefine what is possible in big-wave surfing.
Their combined efforts have driven the sport forward and reinforced his belief that pursuing bold dreams can lead to groundbreaking achievements.
