A 68-year-old man’s move to a senior-smart tiny home reveals a surprising life reset—fresh start, simple living

This senior-smart tiny home became the fresh start a 68-year-old South Carolina man never expected—but deeply needed.

“I used to live in a 5,000 square ft, 5-bedroom home with lots of stuff about 8 miles away on the big lake here. And now I live in 400 square ft. And I love this style of living, the simpler way of life.”

For decades, he raised three children in a large home filled with activity.

There were five dogs at one point, boats, a swimming pool, and friends constantly coming and going. It was a joyful season, but it was also busy and expensive.

Later, as an empty nester and after he and his wife went their separate ways, he began to rethink everything.

He moved into a condo in Tampa, Florida, where living on the 13th floor helped him adjust to smaller spaces.

Still, he wanted something even simpler—something easier to maintain as he aged.

That desire led him to what he now calls the perfect senior-smart tiny home.

The turning point: Hurricanes and a life reset

While living in Florida, two hurricanes devastated his neighborhood. About 90% of it was destroyed.

During that uncertain time, his brother in South Carolina suggested looking into a newly developed tiny home village.

His brother filmed a video walkthrough of the property the day before Hurricane Milton struck.

That same night, while evacuating low-lying areas, he made a bold decision.

“And so during that hurricane raging, I bought this house. And it was beautiful.”

He wired a $10,000 deposit online without ever stepping inside.

Within two weeks, he sold his condo and downsized completely.

He sold his home furnished, packed his essentials into his Mini Cooper—including his dogs and oxygen tanks for a lung injury—and drove to South Carolina.

It was not just a move. It was a reset.

Why this senior-smart tiny home made sense at 68

At nearly 68 years old, he knew he did not want to live off-grid in a remote area where family might need to check on him.

Instead, he chose a tiny home village that offered both privacy and community.

The location is on the water, in a country setting, but within a small neighborhood.

He walks in the mornings and talks with neighbors. He believes staying socially active is important as people age.

This senior-smart tiny home allows him to live independently while still being connected to others.

Designed for simplicity, priced for peace of mind

The home is the Sunset Retreat model from Clayton Homes.

It measures 42 feet long by 12 feet wide, totaling approximately 400 square feet.

It is single-story, which was important to him. He did not want to climb into a loft bedroom.

Ceiling heights range from 10 feet in some areas to 9 feet in others, creating a more open feel.

The layout flows from a large front porch into the main living room, followed by the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom in the back.

Transom windows allow natural light to pour in, giving the home an airy feel. Wood accents add a cabin-style warmth.

He purchased the home for about $105,000. Setup costs, including electrical and plumbing hookups and landscaping, added another $10,000.

Monthly expenses include:

  • $450–$650 lot and community fee (he pays near the higher end for a waterfront lot)
  • Around $120 per month for electricity in winter
  • $129 during the hottest summer month
  • $70 for fiber optic internet
  • Less than $100 per month for insurance

By comparison, his former lake home had property taxes of around $17,000 per year.

Summer electric bills often reached $800 to $1,000 per month.

He describes the difference as freedom.

“This place is highly economical emotionally and for me it’s just a time of life, a season of life where I have so much freedom.”

Living Room and Climate Control

When he first purchased the home, it was empty.

He ordered a 65-inch television, a stand, a sofa, a recliner, and bar stools online and assembled everything himself in half a day.

“My favorite feature is the open airy nature of the home.”

From his seat, he can watch television while looking out the kitchen window at trees and blue sky.

The large windows and wood finishes make the space feel natural rather than cramped.

His family was surprised.

“Oh my god, I could live just like this. They all want to get rid of their homes and move like this.”

Climate control has also impressed him. The home uses two mini-split systems—one in the main living area and one in the bedroom.

During winter, when temperatures dropped into the 20s, the home stayed warm.

During summer, when porch temperatures reached 103 degrees, the inside remained cool.

“These things work so effectively and it’s so economical.”

Ceiling fans and high ceilings help regulate airflow year-round.

Kitchen, office, bedroom, and bathroom

The kitchen is simple but efficient. He cooks often and appreciates that everything is within reach.

“It’s like being in a spaceship or something like that.”

The layout includes a microwave, an oven, quality appliances, open shelving, storage drawers, and a small dishwasher.

He typically washes dishes by hand but values having the option to do so. A strong faucet with good water pressure makes daily use easy.

One standout feature is the built-in workspace. He manages patient support groups, hosts Zoom calls, and runs a YouTube channel from this area.

“This has been one of the best little items that this house had.”

The main-floor bedroom fits a standard full-size bed and includes built-in drawers, cubbies, charging stations, and a window seat.

He prefers keeping it a quiet, sacred space.

When he first saw it in person, he said, “Oh my god, this is perfect.”

The bathroom was a major selling point. It includes a double vanity, skylights, large mirrors, ample storage, a full-size glass walk-in shower, a toilet area, and a stackable washer and dryer.

The closet connects through a pocket door and extends deep into the wall, offering more storage than he currently needs.

Finding freedom in a senior-smart tiny home

Each night, two questions appear on his calendar:

“What do I need that I don’t have? and What do I want that I don’t have?”

His answer to both is the same.

Nothing.
