Over 14 months, Nick, the builder, designed and constructed the home to maximize space, comfort, and style.
His approach combined elements from various building traditions, resulting in a tiny home that showcases his skill and vision.

Nick’s tiny home was driven by a desire to create a space that defied the typical tiny house layout.
“The main vision for this tiny home was really based on the downstairs bedroom,” he said. “I was trying to eliminate the loft entirely, and it worked out.”
Instead of a loft bedroom, Nick opted for a more practical solution with a larger, lower-level sleeping area.
This decision set the tone for the rest of the home’s design, creating an open and accessible floor plan.
The home was built on a 26-foot trailer and spans 8 1/2 feet by 30 feet. The interior is estimated to be around 300 square feet, though the space feels larger due to clever design choices.
Before diving into this project, Nick had experience building tiny homes, including truck campers.
“I started building as an assistant to a carpenter doing heritage house restoration,” he shared. “I did that for a few years and then worked for a framing company, getting a better understanding of structural integrity.”
Over time, he expanded his skills to larger projects, ultimately designing homes that combined his knowledge of RV and traditional house construction.
Thoughtful design features and functionality
The tiny home’s design prioritizes natural light and functional space.
Nick integrated 20 windows and 48 windowpanes into the design, which he believes adds charm to the home.
“I think windows make a space feel nice and romantic,” he explained.
“Living in such a tiny space, every detail needs to be great, so you love it and don’t start wishing you didn’t live there.”
One of the most unique features of the tiny home with a clever layout is the use of materials. Nick sourced much of the wood from demolition projects, including 100-year-old oak banisters repurposed for cabinets and countertops.
The floors are made from old-growth Douglas fir reclaimed from a 1930s house, giving the home a warm, vintage feel.
Additionally, a wooden stove, designed for a space twice the size, provides both heating and ambiance.
Efficient layout and practical amenities
The tiny home is designed to offer maximum efficiency and comfort. It includes a full kitchen, living room, bathroom, and dedicated workspace.
The kitchen is located at the end of the home, an unusual but effective choice.
“In tiny homes, both ends are usually the most valuable spots for a room, and then something gets stuffed in the middle,” Nick said. “I usually put the living room at the end, but I had never done a big kitchen at the end, and it makes a huge difference if you want to cook or bake.”
Essential kitchen appliances include a 20-inch-wide off-grid propane oven and a seven-cubic-foot fridge from Unique, known for its retro design.
A small dining area with two stools is tucked beside the kitchen, providing an ideal meal spot.
For heating, the tiny home is equipped with a wood stove and a backup baseboard heater, ensuring comfort in any season.
The importance of space and storage
Maximizing space was a central goal in Nick’s design. Despite the compact size, the home features ample storage options.
The bedroom has been lowered for more headroom, making it feel more spacious. The living room includes built-in bookcases, adding character and functionality.
“I like to build in little bookcases like this because they add nice dimension to the room,” Nick said.
The bathroom features a composting toilet, propane water heater, and ample storage for towels and toiletries.
Nick also included an upstairs bathroom, which is a first for him. “The bathroom has double windows, so you can peek out,” he said.
The clever use of space in the bathroom ensures it’s functional without feeling cramped.

His approach to building combines practical solutions with aesthetic appeal, creating a space much larger than its 300-square-foot footprint.
“I’ve made about 10 or 12 homes,” he said. “I typically don’t build multiple at once. When I get one completed, I build it out with the best materials, trying to maximize every tiny inch of space.”
