Kirby, a musician once wrote a song called “Spaceship,” about building a spaceship in his backyard and later built an actual spaceship tiny home near his house.
Eight years ago, Kirby and his wife needed more space on their 5-acre property for their boys’ cars and lawnmowers.

They decided to build a two-car garage with a shop on top. Kirby jokingly suggested building a spaceship on top, and to his surprise, his wife agreed.
He credits her for the spaceship’s existence, as he wouldn’t have had the courage to build it alone.

“I said as a joke to my wife, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we built a spaceship on top of it?”‘ And then she said we should do that. It’s really thanks to my wife that the spaceship exists because I never would have had the courage to do it alone,” Kirby shared.
They showed an architect blueprint of a spaceship from “Lost in Space,” wanting a full-sized replica.

After finding a builder willing to work on his spaceship tiny home, they faced challenges and unexpected expenses due to the unique project.
“Nothing is ever cheap regarding anything you want to do in a spaceship. If you want it to look cool and like it belongs here, practically everything had to be custom-made,” Kirby said.
Once weatherproofing was completed, they tackled wiring and plumbing while Kirby took charge of imaginative tasks.

The total cost of construction reached $150,000, covering expenses from pouring concrete to completing the construction.
Originally, they aimed to build a party space and a man cave and explored options like hosting shows or recording sessions to generate income.
Realizing the band’s financial constraints, they pivoted to rent it out as an Airbnb.

Finishing the project gave Kirby a sense of fulfilment, turning distant dreams into reality.
Amidst small gatherings with friends, he often pondered future plans.
Achieving completion brought immense satisfaction, realizing those long-held “someday” ideas.

The spaceship tiny home is 726 feet tall and around 40 feet in diameter.
Despite its extraterrestrial appearance, it’s built with a stick frame covered in torch-down material.
It boasts two sets of windows, a porthole, and a dome skylight and is illuminated at night with timed lights.

Perched atop a two-car garage, the project spanned approximately 7 years.
As you step inside, you’re greeted by the “Lunar Lounge”.
The bar, ingeniously crafted from discarded pallets, houses various amenities, including a mini fridge, freezer, sink, microwave, air fryer, toaster oven, and smokeless grill.

Kirby’s DIY approach extends to the bar’s design. Its covering is made from the same coin design material used for the floor, giving it a distinct mid-21st-century aesthetic reminiscent of the futuristic visions of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Moving further into the spaceship, the dining area offers breathtaking views of the creek and woods through its windows.
A nod to nostalgia, the iconic B9 robot from “Lost in Space” adds to the ambiance.

Despite its compact size, the dining area has hosted parties for up to 50 people, though it’s cozier with fewer guests.
The spaceship can comfortably accommodate up to eight people for overnight stays, thanks to a queen-size Murphy bed, a couple of futon sofa sleepers, an inflatable queen-sized mattress, and additional seating in the storage area.
To ensure comfort throughout the year, the spaceship features a mini-split system for climate control.

An unexpected but charming addition is the R2-D2 figure acquired from an antique Portland shop, adding a whimsy touch to the interior.
Descending via a ladder system reminiscent of the one seen in “Lost in Space,” you reach the lower deck, serving as a storage area.
Here, you’ll also find the spaceship’s “emergency exit,” where guests can meet “Frank,” a character who met an unfortunate end due to a spacesuit mishap.

Adjacent to the storage area is a room stocked with bedding and costumes for youngsters, featuring space suits and Star Wars costumes for those who wish to channel their inner Wookie during their stay.
The bathroom, while compact, is fully functional, featuring a shower and other necessities.
The spaceship’s unique freezing tube bay offers an immersive sleeping experience inspired by the show “Lost in Space,” albeit with a cost-effective twist using repurposed tubes.

One of the highlights of the interior is the flight console, complete with controls inspired by classic sci-fi films and TV shows.
The console adds to the immersive experience of commanding a spacecraft from starboard thrusters to artificial gravity.
Adding to the authenticity and privacy are custom-shaped windows inspired by the spaceship’s source material, ensuring guests can enjoy their stay without glimpses of neighboring houses.

These unique windows also contribute to temperature regulation, particularly during warmer months.
For entertainment and relaxation, the spaceship features an audiovisual section and a cozy captain’s ready room, equipped with stereo equipment and memorabilia from past media visits.
Despite its modest size, the spaceship attracts diverse guests, including Star Wars and Star Trek enthusiasts, UFO aficionados, and families seeking a unique vacation experience.

The recent addition of rib lights provides fun nighttime effects, adding to the spaceship’s overall charm and appeal.
With its thoughtful design and attention to detail, the spaceship promises an unforgettable stay for all who venture aboard.
