A young woman was told she’d never walked again, so she took a “hold my beer” approach and proved the doctor wrong.
Lorenza, 19 at the time, woke up in a hospital with severe injuries following a 40-foot fall in July 2018.
Originally from France and now living in Arizona, she has no memory of the accident but vividly recalls when doctors said her life would never be the same.
Her injuries included three fractured vertebrae that caused paralysis, along with a broken wrist, two broken ankles, a fractured sternum, and damage to her lungs and carotid artery.

“The doctors thought I wouldn’t walk again because of how bad my spinal cord injury was, but they still told me to try nonetheless!” she told Newsweek.
Lorenza, now 25, overcame the odds after a long recovery, proving everyone wrong. She shares her inspiring story online, gaining attention from her followers.

In a recent TikTok video posted on September 8, the content creator received over 47,000 views as she documented her transition from using a wheelchair to walking.
The video begins with a scene of Lorenza in her wheelchair, along with a quote from her doctor, and then shows her walking with the message, “my body: ‘hold my beer.'”
After 18 months of recovery from a disabling injury, Lorenza adjusted to life in a wheelchair, believing her mobility would be limited for good.
However, things changed in December 2020 when she met Gabriel, an American man, through Instagram. Their relationship flourished, and they married in 2022.

As they traveled together, Lorenza’s recovery took an unexpected turn, showing signs of improvement that defied her initial prognosis.
“During those months of travel, we noticed that my body was becoming more reactive, my core was stronger, and my hip flexors were a lot more responsive,” she shared.
Lorenza’s recovery improved significantly thanks to her partner, Gabriel, a fitness coach.
Although she went through extensive physical therapy, Gabriel’s support and expertise made a real difference.
He encouraged her to try to walk again, leading to a final effort that truly paid off.
Lorenza began using a walker in October 2022 with the support of Gabriel and a physical therapist friend specializing in spinal cord injuries.

Despite facing challenges and pain, a turning point came during a visit to her grandparents in Italy in May 2023.
Lorenza found significant relief while exercising in the sea, as the water’s buoyancy eased her discomfort.
This aquatic therapy helped her regain control over her movements. By July 2023, Lorenza achieved a remarkable milestone: her first unassisted steps.
Today, Lorenza uses crutches for mobility outside her home. She relies on a wheelchair for longer distances or when she experiences pain.
Reflecting on her experience, Lorenza told Newsweek: “The message I hope people gain from watching or reading my story is that life is beautiful and we should never give up.

Despite becoming permanently disabled as a teenager and fearing her life was over, she has found joy and fulfillment in her life after years of living with a disability.
In an interview with Newsweek, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, chief medical advisor for Fortune Recommends Health, underscored the rarity of Lorenza’s recovery.
He noted that regaining the ability to walk after severe injuries, particularly spinal cord injuries leading to paraplegia, is uncommon.
“Medical professionals note that only a small number of people with complete spinal cord injuries regain movement, making this young woman’s progress truly impressive,” Dr. Dasgupta added.
Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a physician in Los Angeles, shared key advice for individuals recovering from life-changing injuries.

He stressed the importance of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that includes both physical therapy and mental health support for effective healing.
The doctor recommended setting realistic goals, being aware of one’s emotional state, and engaging in adaptive activities to aid recovery.
He also emphasized the need for patience and resilience, noting that the healing process can be lengthy and challenging.
Here’s Lorenza’s viral “hold my beer” moment:
@leausongeante This body deserves a medal, doesn’t it? 🥇 Seriously though, I am always amazed by the resilience and strength of the human body. The injuries I had after the 40ft fall were extensive, the doc told me that the spinal cord injury I had was one of the nastiest they ever saw in surgery. When I started having feelings they told me it was great, when I started gaining some voluntary movements 3/4 years after they told me it was just amazing, when I start walking 5 years after they told me it was marvelous. Now they don’t have any expectations anymore and neither do I 😂 I am so incredibly grateful for this recovery. I still have a lot of uncomfortable symptoms and issues, but this is more than what I ever imagined was possible!! Don’t worry, do wheelies 👩🏻🦽➡️ #disability#disabilityawareness#wheelchair#sci#spinalcordinjury#paraplegic#nevergiveup#positivity ♬ Free Bird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
