Couple built a luxurious tiny house—and now they’re helping others downsize with style

Gina and Andy, the husband-and-wife team behind Firefly Tiny Homes, have turned their passion for minimalist living into a thriving business, starting with their lavish tiny house.

What began as a one-and-a-half-year road trip in an RV with their teenage daughters led to a life-changing idea.

That adventure sparked a vision for a more permanent, yet equally freeing way of living.

“It got us thinking how could we build something that gave that sort of feel, enabled that sort of life, but was more of an asset, was something that was uh going to last, that was comfortable and felt really good to live in,” Andy said.

This turning point laid the foundation for Firefly Tiny Homes, which they launched to create small, comfortable, and beautifully designed homes, starting with the one they built for themselves.

From savings to sawdust: How their lavish tiny house journey began

In 2020, fueled by savings and a bold vision, Gina and Andy started building their first tiny home by hand, in a workshop.

They poured their energy into this labor of love with no outside funding. Gina brought her flair for design, while Andy applied his deep construction knowledge.

Together, they shaped what would become Firefly Tiny Homes, a company now known for its quality builds and especially for crafting each lavish tiny house with care.

But Gina’s role goes far beyond decorating. She is hands-on throughout the build process.

“Most people just don’t assume that I help build. They um they’ll say, ‘Oh, you just clean up,’ or ‘Oh, you just uh kind of help decorate.’ But no, I’m there every day in the workshop building alongside him,” she said.

Their combined effort, from design to construction, is evident in every square inch of their personal, lavish, tiny house.

Lavish tiny house: design, function, and durability

Their lavish tiny house stretches 42 feet long and 10.5 feet wide—larger than many in the movement.

The home was built with the idea that indoor and outdoor spaces should work together.

“We are always thinking about how the inside relates to the outside,” Andy noted.

With a connected deck, outdoor plug-ins for lighting, and comfortable seating, the couple designed the exterior to extend their indoor living space.

Durability was a top priority. They chose metal siding and roofing for a sleek look and long-lasting protection.

“We are incredibly careful about what we build with…So we have metal siding, we have a metal roof. Even the bottom of our tiny homes is a metal skin,” Andy explained.

Their tiny home sits on a mobile I-frame trailer chassis.

Although located in South Carolina, the couple has shipped homes as far as California, proving their lavish tiny house design can go just about anywhere.

The heart of the home: A cozy living area in the lavish tiny house

The home welcomes guests with a kitchen that flows into a warm, well-planned living area.

Knowing their adult daughters often visit, Gina and Andy ensured the space could comfortably fit four adults.

A pull-out IKEA couch with storage offers flexibility, while the walls include clever nooks for drinks and everyday items.

“So we take the time to think through like how can we add little touches… to make living tiny just more enjoyable,” Andy said.

They used a mix of drywall and lightweight local wood paneling to create a cozy but spacious vibe. One standout feature: the drywall has never cracked, even after moving the home.

“We’ve never had trouble with drywall cracking… because our uh structure is so strong,” Andy added.

It’s bright, full of windows, and includes personal USB charging nooks. Full wardrobes with drawers ensure plenty of storage.

The couple installed a temperature-controlled room-to-room fan that draws in heated or cooled air from the main area to keep the room comfortable, even in extreme temperatures.

The master bedroom, inspired by their RV travels, includes full wardrobes, bedside drawers, and even hampers. A bump-out window provides a cozy nook with extra storage underneath.

“This is kind of a layout that we took from our time when we were traveling and living tiny in uh in an RV,” Andy said.

Gourmet touches: A fully functional kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most impressive features of their lavish tiny house. Gina, who spends much time cooking, designed it with daily life in mind.

“When I look around at other tiny homes and their kitchens… it’s usually pretty evident to me that a person who doesn’t spend a whole lot of time in a kitchen is usually designing them,” she said.

Instead of cabinets with doors, they installed lower drawers for easier access.

The kitchen includes a full-size dishwasher—a rare luxury in tiny homes—and a roll-out drawer for trash and recycling.

The floors are engineered hardwood for durability, comfort, and a stylish non-repeating grain.

A bathroom that maximizes every inch

Next to the kitchen is a combined laundry and bathroom area. A modern all-in-one washer-dryer with energy-saving heat pump technology makes laundry easy.

“This is going really well. Happy to continue to recommend it… It’s super efficient,” Andy shared.

The 36-inch shower is roomy, and a pocket door separates the toilet and vanity for privacy. There’s even direct access to the master bedroom—a thoughtful detail borrowed from their RV experience.

Living with purpose: Advocacy through their lavish tiny house

Gina and Andy are proud of how their lavish tiny house turned out, but they know the movement has a long way to go.

They’re passionate about making tiny living more accessible and changing public perception.

“This experience of living in this tiny home has… confirmed what we already knew, that this is a valuable addition to uh housing options,” Andy said.

Still, zoning and legal hurdles remain. Though they bought land in a neighborhood, they can only temporarily live in their tiny home while building a traditional house.

“We’re going to try to advocate and we’re going to use this house to try to convince… our town and… people around us that this is actually a really good solution,” Andy explained.

For now, their lavish tiny house is more than a place to live—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when passion, design, and purpose come together in 420 square feet.
