An emotional “ambulance serenade” for a cancer patient on her final journey home has touched people worldwide.
This act of kindness highlights the dedication of caregivers like Yvon Kanters from the Netherlands.
A trained social worker, Yvon volunteered at a nursing home during the 2020 pandemic, offering support to those in need.
A staff member, aware of the 26-year-old’s incredible voice, asked her to sing for dementia and Parkinson’s patients who felt isolated but loved opera.
As she performed, Yvon told Newsweek, the man pointed at her, then at his tears, as if to say, “You’re singing for me” and “You’re bringing me to tears.”

“I really saw a new way of connection, and that music is really a universal language,” she said. “We can speak with anyone.”
Yvon’s viral video singing for an older man led to a wave of requests from nursing homes and hospitals, where she performed for patients receiving cancer treatment and dialysis.
This eventually culminated in a deeply emotional “ambulance serenade” watched by four million people as Yvon sang a beloved song for a woman and her husband during her final journey home following the exhaustion of her treatment options.
In a heartfelt TikTok video posted on February 22, Yvon shared, “She chose this song for her final journey home.”

As the woman lay in a non-emergency ambulance bed, Yvon sang a powerful version of “The Power of Love” by Jennifer Rush, a song also covered by Celine Dion.
She later told Newsweek that when she first entered the room, the woman was with her husband and full of optimism.
“We brought her to the ambulance and then asked her, ‘I’m a singer and I’m coming along for the day, is there something you want to hear?’ She and her husband, they love each otherโtheir love is so visible. She said she and her husband’s song was ‘The Power of Love.'”
Yvon recalled that the woman was visibly moved to tears as she sang, even though she never shared the reason behind her emotions.
Later, at the woman’s home, Yvon performed “Dancing Queen” as a special tribute to the couple’s longtime love for ABBA.

The video deeply moved TikTok users, prompting an outpouring of emotional reactions.
One person highlighted the impact of music in patient care, sharing that they always ask ambulance patients which songs they would like to hear.
Another admitted they couldn’t stop crying, while a 59-year-old man described himself as “sobbing” over the touching performance.
Many others expressed similar sentiments, with one user joking that the video should have a warning.
Yvon told Newsweek that music has always been a big part of her life, with her family deeply involved.
Her mother and sisters played instruments, while her father supported them by driving to concerts and rehearsals.

She also shared that her father has a muscle disease, an experience that has shaped her perspective on illness.
Because of this, she feels a strong connection to children with parents battling dementia or cancer, understanding the emotional toll of seeing a loved one suffer.
The Alzheimer’s Association emphasizes that music can help patients stay engaged and express themselves, even in the later stages of the disease.
Many can still recognize familiar songs, tap along, or sing lyrics from childhood.
Experts suggest allowing patients to choose music to make the experience more meaningful and comforting.

Yvon is unsure where her musical path will lead, but her priority remains creating meaningful moments through her performances.
While she recognizes the impact of large concerts, she finds the greatest fulfillment in personal, one-on-one interactions, where music provides comfort and connection.
“I see what the music does to people, and I think it really brings them something,” she said.

Some encounters stay with you forever. Yesterday, I sang for a remarkable woman, an fighter full of life. She was being transported home by Nurse Anita and the mid-complex ambulance, a service for patients who need medical supervision but no emergency care. No sirens, but a journey filled with meaning. She loved all kinds of music, but when I asked if she had a special song with her husband, she didnโt hesitate: "The Power of Love." As I sang, I saw tears well up in her eyes. A song that held so much more meaning than just words and melody. After this moment, we continued with a small, intimate living room concert.. one that will stay in my heart forever. Thank you, Nurse Anita, and thank you to this beautiful woman for sharing this moment with me.
