When an abandoned baby finds family, it becomes more than a reunionโa powerful story of healing, hope, and second chances.
That happened to Jon Scarlett-Phillips, who spent decades carrying unanswered questions about his past.
At 40 years old, he finally met his birth sisters in an emotional reunion that began with heartbreak but ended in healing, per the Daily Mail.
A shocking start for the abandoned baby who later finds family
In September 1984, Jon was left just hours after birth in a Co-Op shopping bag inside a public toilet near a leisure center car park in Bletchley, Milton Keynes.
He was wrapped in a blanket, his placenta still attached, and had no identifying note.
Thankfully, three teenage girls discovered him just in time.
โI was found by three girls,โ Jon said in ITV’s “Long Lost Family: Born Without a Trace,” adding, โFinding something like that at that age is absolutely crazy. I’m grateful, very grateful that they heard me and found me. They’re the ones that saved my life.โ
Life after being found: growing up as a foundling
Jon was adopted as a baby and raised in Wiltshire by a loving family. Despite this, being a foundling left an emotional mark.
โI had a really good childhood. I always knew I was a foundling,โ he said. โBut when you’re a kid, it messes with you and you rebel against everything and anyone. I had a lot of anger issues, a lot of emptiness, and when you feel empty, you don’t know how to fill that.โ
When his adoptive mother suffered brain damage in a tragic accident, Jonโs struggles deepened.
By 18, he had survived a near-fatal overdoseโa moment that became a turning point.
He gave up drugs, trained as a chef, and eventually started a family with his wife, Becky.
A life rebuilt, but questions remained
Although he had found peace in adulthood, the fact that he was abandoned never left him.
Standing outside the public toilet where he was left as a newborn reopened old wounds and stirred emotions that had long been buried.
He finally reached out to ITVโs Long Lost Family, hoping to uncover the truth about his birth.
The search begins as an abandoned baby finds family through DNA
With no records linking him to his biological family, the showโs team began their search with DNA testing.
But Jon made a surprising discovery of his ownโhis DNA match revealed his biological father.
Though the two never spoke directly, the brief contact confirmed a weekend relationship with a woman the father believed to be Jonโs mother.
However, the relationship did not continue.
Genealogist Ariel Bruce later uncovered that Jonโs birth mother was still aliveโand not the woman his father had thought.
She was only 20 years old at the time, recently divorced, and already caring for two daughters when she became pregnant again.
According to Bruce, overwhelmed by fear, secrecy, and emotional pressure, she made the desperate decision to leave the baby in hopes someone would find and care for him.
Foundling meets birth family after four decades
While Jonโs birth mother wasnโt ready to meet, her two daughtersโJonโs half-sistersโembraced the opportunity for a family reunion.
During the episode, host Davina McCall handed Jon a heartfelt letter from them. They spoke of regret over lost time, excitement for the future, and their deep desire to welcome him into their lives.
In a private moment, Jon read their message: โTheyโre the ones that saved my life.โ
Their words moved him deeply, and the connection was instant when they finally met in person.

Hope and healing as abandoned baby finds family at last
Jon described the experience as emotional, life-changing, and healing.
โI feel a lot lighter. I feel a bit more full, as well. That emptiness has disappeared completely now. I’m a happy man,โ he said.
Though his birth mother remains distant, her message made it clear sheโs not rejecting himโjust not ready.
His sisters assured Jon they would help him bridge the past with the present.
