Two-legged Chihuahua detects ‘widowmaker’ heart attack before his owner feels symptoms

A two-legged Chihuahua named Champ is being praised for saving its owner’s life after sensing a heart attack before symptoms began.

Andrew Kuzyk, 63, was relaxing in his mobile home in Locust Grove, Georgia, when Champ suddenly jumped onto his chest and began whining in a way he had never done before.

“He hugged my chest right about where my heart is and made a whine I’ve never heard him utter before. Shortly after that, I started having chest pains,” Andrew recalled.

That warning was enough to convince his wife, Pamela, to call 911 right away. An ambulance rushed Andrew to a hospital in Atlanta—about 30 miles away—where doctors performed emergency surgery.

A life-threatening “heart attack alert” was saved in time

Once at the hospital, doctors discovered Andrew was suffering from a heart attack, an emergency caused by a blocked artery.

It was the kind often called a “widowmaker,” a type of heart attack known to be fatal if not treated quickly, WSAZ3 reported.

During surgery, Andrew’s heart stopped twice on the operating table. But doctors were able to revive him both times.

“The doctor showed me this giant thing blocking my heart right after surgery,” Andrew said. “He said in his career, he’s never seen anything like it.”

Today, Andrew is recovering, and he credits Champ with giving him a second chance at life.

“I know for sure that without Champ I wouldn’t be here,” he said.

A two-legged Chihuahua with a powerful instinct

Champ is more than just a pet—he’s a survivor too. The two-legged Chihuahua was born missing its front legs.

He now shares the Andrews’ home with five other rescued Chihuahuas, many of whom have special needs.

One of the dogs is blind, and all have been adopted by Andrew and Pamela, who provide them with love and care.

Champ, however, stands out not only because of his condition but because of his ability to sense danger.

This was not the first time he warned Andrew of something serious. Before Andrew was diagnosed with brain cancer, Champ had shown the same unusual behavior.

“I love all my dogs,” Andrew said in past interviews. “But Champ… he’s just incredible.”

Though he has not received formal training, Champ has shown signs of being a natural medical alert dog, able to detect health issues through instinct alone.

Dogs with a gift: How some sense when we’re unwell

Experts say some dogs can detect health problems in their owners, including heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and even certain cancers.

Whether trained or not, these dogs may respond to changes in scent, movement, or body chemistry.

A medical alert dog can be taught to recognize subtle shifts in a person’s breathing, heart rate, or smell.

But some dogs, like Champ, seem to pick up on those changes naturally, especially when closely bonded with their human companion, says St. Francisville Animal Hospital.

Champ’s ability to act as a heart attack alert helped save Andrew’s life just in time. His bond with Andrew and his instinctive reaction proved stronger than any machine.

A two-legged dog becomes a symbol of hope

Now in recovery, Andrew is still facing multiple health challenges, including several types of cancer. But he believes his survival—and Champ’s role in it—is no coincidence.

As a born-again Christian, Andrew sees his two-legged dog as a divine gift.

He considers Champ part of a trio of blessings, along with his wife, Pamela, and his faith.

He also says he’s drawn to animals who’ve been through challenging situations, especially Chihuahuas, who often get overlooked due to their barking or size.

Andrew has turned his home into a sanctuary for these animals, offering love and shelter for those with disabilities or chronic conditions—just like himself.

The strength of a two-legged Chihuahua

Champ may look fragile from the outside, but his actions have proven otherwise.

The two-legged Chihuahua not only survived his own physical challenges but went on to become a lifesaver.

His story is one of deep connection, second chances, and the unexplainable ways animals can care for us.
