After years in the automotive industry, he found the work environment uninspiring.

However, his weekend travels sparked a passion for nomadic living.

“I always felt like kind of this like the town Gremlin, like I was just living in my car and other people weren’t,” Erik recalled.

These early experiences fueled his dream of a permanent mobile home. Initially, he considered a bus, but a vintage trolley listed on Craigslist immediately caught his attention.

Despite its poor condition, he saw potential where others saw scrap.

“When I saw the trolley for the first time, I just laughed like how silly is that,” he said.

But he made an offer, and soon, the trolley was his.

The challenges of a trolley tiny home conversion

Turning the trolley into a livable home was far more challenging than Erik had anticipated.

What he thought would be a simple renovation turned into a six-year project. The trolley tiny home conversion involved extensive mechanical and structural repairs.

The 25-foot, 13,500-pound Great American Trolley, mounted on a 1994 P3500 chassis, needed a complete overhaul.

“I thought it would be good as is, and turns out I was very wrong,” Erik admitted.

The extent of damage—including rust, rot, and corrosion—meant he had to rebuild everything from the axles and windows to the roof and floor.

Despite the difficulties, the process allowed him to create a safe, functional, personalized home on wheels.

Sustainability in a trolley tiny home conversion

A key feature of Erik’s trolley tiny home conversion is sustainability. He prioritized using recycled and salvaged materials, adding character while reducing waste.

“But I definitely would say most of the stuff in here was found for free,” Erik explained.

He repurposed discarded items from a roadside bed frame to an old vanity sink to furnish his home.

His resourcefulness kept costs down and gave the space a unique, eclectic charm.

The trolley’s transformation: Specifications and features

Now a fully functional mobile home, the trolley includes many practical features.

The exterior has four solar panels generating 400 watts of power, three roof vents, and an exhaust port for a fireplace.

The front maintains its vintage look, featuring three original windows with independent wipers.

Under the hood, Erik replaced the original gas-guzzling engine with a Gen 4 LS engine, improving fuel efficiency from 4 miles per gallon to over 10.

The interior costs about $32,000 and includes a galley kitchen, a sleeping area, a dining space that converts into a bed, and a workspace.

The total mechanical upgrades, including the engine and wiring, amounted to around $116,000.

Interior design: Functionality and style

Inside, Erik has created a cozy yet stylish living space. The galley kitchen, built from salvaged materials, includes a three-burner stove, an oven, and a sink.

The living area features custom-built cabinets made from repurposed flooring and antique trunks.

Unlike many tiny homes, Erik’s includes a full-sized bed for extra comfort.

He also preserved the trolley’s original charm by keeping features like grab bar brackets and adding elegant chandeliers, blending vintage elements with modern functionality.

On the road: A life of freedom

The unique design and functionality allow him to travel while enjoying the comforts of home—a stark contrast to his former life in the automotive industry.

“I have the freedom to pursue whatever it is I want, and I’m so, so excited to see what that is,” he said.

His journey proves that even an old trolley can be transformed into something extraordinary with hard work and vision.
