Teen saves family after a day at the beach turns dangerous

The Appelbee family was spending their last day of vacation at Quindalup Beach in Western Australia.

What began as a joyful outing with two paddleboards and a kayak quickly turned dangerous when the children drifted too far from the shore.

Joanne Appelbee, Austin’s mother, recalled how fast the situation escalated.

“The wind picked up and it went from there,” she said. “We lost oars, and we drifted out further…. It kind of all went wrong very, very quickly.”

Knowing she could not leave her youngest children, 12-year-old Beau and 8-year-old Grace, alone on the paddleboards, Joanne made the difficult decision to send Austin back to shore. At the same time, they were still close enough to see it.

Austin’s four-hour swim to save his family

Austin first tried to reach help using a kayak, but it began filling with water and eventually capsized.

He lost an oar and had to paddle with his arm until the kayak finally flipped over for the last time. He then had no choice but to swim the rest of the way.

Alone in the open water, Austin pushed his body to the limit. To stay motivated, he sang songs and thought about the people he loved.

“I was thinking about mum, Beau and Grace. I was also thinking about my friends and my girlfriend — I have a really good bunch of friends,” he said.

After swimming roughly four nautical miles, Austin finally felt the sand beneath his feet.

Exhausted and in disbelief, he recalled, “When I hit the floor I thought, how am I on land right now — is this a dream?” Then he remembered his family might still be in danger. They “could still be alive out there — I have to go save them,” he thought.

Teen saves family by reaching shore and calling for help

By around 6 p.m., Austin reached his mother’s bag on the beach and used a phone to call for help.

The effort had taken a toll, and he fainted shortly after. He was taken to a hospital, where he called his father in tears, still unsure whether his mother and siblings had survived.

Meanwhile, Joanne and the younger children had drifted about 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) from shore.

The night grew colder and darker, and Joanne feared the worst. “I had assumed Austin hadn’t made it,” she told reporters.

Police and rescue teams launched a major search. Eventually, a boat located Joanne, Beau, and Grace.

As the children reached the boat, they fell into the water, making the rescue tense and frightening. Joanne described it as “an absolute nightmare.”
