Unfortunately, Shane’s father passed away before the home was finished, making the tiny house a healing project and a tribute to the family.

Shane’s artistic passion also played a key role. He has spent eight years sculpting almost full-time, often using salvaged timber.

The money earned from selling his artwork helped fund the house’s construction.

Shane expressed gratitude for those who supported his art, saying, “Everyone that bought a piece of artwork has essentially helped fund me creating a home for myself and my daughter.”

It measures 8 meters long, 4.2 meters high, and 2.5 meters wide, compact but carefully designed for comfort and efficiency.

It cost just around $23,000, about half of which was spent on recycled materials. Shane spent extra time sourcing and preparing them, a common trade-off for DIY builders.

A key design principle is solar passive design, learned from Shane’s father, which uses the sun’s natural path to heat and cool the home.

Shane explained, “You build to that sun’s path because it’ll be up high in summer and down low in the winter.” This helps minimize electricity use and maintain comfort year-round.

Living room and bedrooms

Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, filled with art Shane collected through trades with artists from places like Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.

This gives the home a unique cultural touch without featuring Shane’s sculptures.

Timber dominates the interior, balanced with bright, light colors to keep the space airy.

A Danish wood stove, unusual for Queensland’s climate, helps reduce humidity during wet spells.

Shane shared how closing windows after rain and lighting the stove “dries up everything so fast,” highlighting his attention to moisture control.

The lounge area faces the forest through sliding doors. It includes a hammock for summer breezes, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

The house has two bedrooms. Shane’s daughter enjoys her loft bedroom upstairs, where solar panels provide shade and her clothes are stored on the warm, dry western wall.

She likes the space for being bright and not scary, unlike their previous larger home.

Shane’s bedroom is private and cool downstairs, with smart storage and frosted windows for privacy.

Kitchen: Practical and efficient

The kitchen maximizes vertical space with open shelves for easy access and drying.

Shane said, “Tiny homes are quite tall, so everything is built up.”

He used recycled stainless steel for the sink and racks, appreciating their durability despite scratches.

Cooking uses both gas and induction. Shane prefers cooking outside over a fire, which also helps his daughter disconnect from screens and connect with nature.

The outdoor bush kitchen includes a barrel table perfect for barbecues or cooling baths on hot days.

Shane explained the design anticipates future needs with a separate amenities block on the property.

He values this separation, saying it’s “actually quite nice to separate it from your house in a way.”
