Tali’s mini skoolie, a converted short school bus, is a striking example of how a small space can be transformed into a cozy, artistic home.
This mobile residence, named the Bodhi Bus, is packed with intricate woodworking and creative design, all reflecting Tali’s dedication and love for the project.
Despite its compact size, the mini skoolie offers comfort and character, serving as Tali’s full-time home and a symbol of his creative journey.

A vision of freedom: The birth of the mini skoolie
Growing up on Vancouver Island, surrounded by nature, Tali developed a desire for personal space and the freedom to explore.
“The main idea behind the bus is to create like a space for myself but then also have the freedom of travel,” he says.

This vision for a mobile lifestyle and a need for a peaceful sanctuary sparked his decision to create the mini skoolie.
Tali found his perfect canvas in a 1990 Chevy van Dir Thomas school bus, listed on Craigslist for $2,200.
Mostly gutted, the bus provided a blank slate for Tali’s ambitious transformation, setting the stage for the start of the mini skoolie project.

The transformation: Five months of hard work and dedication
Turning the bus into a fully functional and visually appealing mini skoolie took five months of hard work.
Tali focused on using natural and repurposed materials, driven by aesthetic choices and cost efficiency.

“I tried to like incorporate as many natural features and upcycle and recycled materials as I could for cost,” Tali explains.
His resourcefulness didn’t stop at materials; Tali bartered his artwork for wood and supplies, keeping the total cost of the build to just $5,000.
His commitment to sustainability and creativity paid off in a stunning mobile home reflecting his artistic vision and practical needs.

More than just a home: A journey of healing
For Tali, the mini skoolie project became more than a home—it became a form of therapy during a difficult period.
He admits, “When I bought the bus I was in a pretty dark place.”

Feeling stuck and unhappy in his personal life and career, Tali poured his emotions into the bus build.
“I kind of ended up just putting all my love and energy into the bus build, which is like a really beautiful way to keep myself busy and just use my creativity,” he shares.
The mini skoolie gave Tali a creative outlet and helped him reconnect with his passions, including music and art.

Over time, the project transformed into a sanctuary where he could heal and reflect.
“It’s your home, it’s probably the most important thing you can put all your love and energy into,” he says.
Bodhi bus: Specifications and features of the mini skoolie
Tali’s mini skoolie, Bodhi Bus, combines creativity and functionality in a small living space.

Built from a 1990 Chevy van Dir Thomas school bus, it measures 7.5 feet wide and 16 feet long, with a roofline that Tali lowers for easier driving.
The bus’s exterior showcases Tali’s artistic vision, with a “living wall” made of natural elements he collects during travels.
He also added a chalkboard to the back to share messages with fellow travelers.

The mini skoolie uses a gravity-fed system with four PVC pipes mounted on the roof for water. Tali also installed a gravity-fed shower on the side, which is ideal for desert environments.
Despite the limited water capacity, Tali values having fresh water, especially when off the grid.
On the roof, Tali created a small deck with a relaxing view.

“I just wanted a sword space in the back and then like a little patio up front to chill,” he says.
The back compartment holds surfboards, tools, and propane. Tali also used reclaimed old-growth cedar for the deck, turning it into a natural art piece.
Inside the mini skoolie, Tali’s craftsmanship is evident in the use of natural materials. A front window in the cockpit area adds light and provides space for a small garden.

The floor, designed to resemble “River Rock,” adds a natural touch despite its weight.
Near the entrance, Tali set up an altar to collect “stones and feathers and just different cool things I found on the beach.”
The cozy reading nook includes a small library, and a handmade lamp crafted from choya wood adds a personal touch.

Tali also keeps his flutes nearby, which he enjoys playing, especially in the desert.
The kitchen is simple but efficient, with a two-burner gas stove, a maple sink with a live edge, and plenty of storage. A 12-volt fridge and a Berkey water filter ensure fresh food and clean water.
In the rear of the mini skoolie, Tali created a small pantry, and the jack-knife bed doubles as a couch, with additional storage beneath.

He made the most of every inch, especially since he envisioned the mini skoolie as a “hosting space.”
Clever storage solutions maximize every inch of the bus, making it functional and comfortable.
A crystal dining table at the heart of the mini skoolie
One of the most unique features of the mini skoolie is the custom crystal dining table, which Tali calls “definitely the heart of the bus.”

Crafted from cedar burl and filled with crystals from Tali’s travels, the table also includes organite, a material believed to cleanse energy.
Tali explains, “I just really wanted to sort of like attract the people that I wanted to hang out with and repel the people I didn’t want to hang out with during the trip and it’s like definitely been working pretty well.”
The table glows at night, thanks to embedded lights and phosphorescent powder.

Tali’s vision was to create a “West Coast tile pool” that he could take with him—an elegant and functional space for meals and reflection.
The purpose of the mini skoolie: A new beginning
For Tali, the mini skoolie represents more than just a home; it symbolizes freedom and a break from societal norms.
“I feel like in every way the bus sort of like offer me a way out of the trap of society,” he reflects.

The Bodhi Bus has allowed Tali to combine his passions for travel, art, music, and community, creating a life that feels truer to who he is.
Through the mini skoolie, Tali has found not just a mobile home but a journey of self-discovery and healing that continues as he travels and shares his experiences with others.
