Retired and self-proclaimed ‘old coots’ set up a booth at farmers market to give free life advice

In making decisions, most people seek advice from the people around them. Be it about changing careers, venturing in new relationships, or simply buying make-ups or cellphones, people tend to ask what others think about their concerns. But the question is, are we consulting the ‘right’ people?

Well, as they say, there is no better teacher than experience. And who else have more experience than you do but the elderly? The wisdom they have learned from their years might be just the right advise you need!

If you do not know anyone whom you can ask a sound advice from, well you may drop by Salt Lake City, Utah. There, a group of retired friends have set-up a booth that offers advice about anything under the sun for FREE!

The group of seniors behind the brilliant idea always meet together at least once a week to hang out and catch up with one another. But when they realized that they already know each other’s story by heart, the group of friends decided to channel their time and effort with something more productive.

“We were sitting outside, bored stiff from talking to each other, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to get us a booth across the street at the farmers market, where we can give advice.’” The 69-year-old Tony Caputo shared how their booth was conceived.

With all of them agreeing with the brilliant idea, they immediately formed what they fondly call “Old Coots.” And soon enough, they began setting up their table up at the famer’s market. And as it turned out, the old coots do not only have free advice in store for everyone- they also have a good sense of humor!

Their booth signage reads: “Old Coots Giving Advice — It’s Probably Bad Advice, But It’s Free”.

What actually began as a joke turned out to be such a huge hit to the people! A lot of people patronized their booth and soon enough, word of mouth began to spread. It was only a matter of time before the Old Coots’ booth became the most popular booth in the farmer’s market!

“It started as a joke, but it’s become a phenomenon,” Tony added with pride. “Somebody told us the other day that we’re the most popular attraction at the market. We always listen carefully and don’t give gratuitous advice.”

The friends composed of seniors continue to meet with one another by setting up their booth every Saturdays. And with 30-40 people lining up on their table to get free advice, they sure will stay for a long time! And if you are thinking about paying their booth a visit, there’s one rule you have to keep in mind. No religious nor political questions allowed!

“To be truthful, I’m not sure that any of us can claim to have much wisdom,” John Lesnan, also a fellow member of the Old Coots clarified.  “but it sure has been a lot of fun. Maybe all of us coots really do have more to offer than we thought.”

The Old Coots are not only popular on the farmer’s market. A lot of people are also dropping by their Facebook page to share their thoughts about the tips and advices they have gotten from the wise old men.

“They know everything simple as that!” A Facebook user exclaimed, impressed about the old coots.

“These are the wisest old coots you’ve ever asked advice from.” Another Facebook user shared, recommending the old coots’ services.

“Fun listening and it even sparked a conversation in our home. Thanks Coots.” Another Facebook user expressed, sharing how interesting the old coots’ advices were.

If you will have the opportunity to talk with the Old Coots, what will you consult with them? We would love to hear your thoughts so feel free to SHARE them under the comment section!
