This quadriplegic love story began with a moment that changed Cole Sydnorโs life forever. In August 2011, Cole was still a teenager when he went swimming in Virginiaโs James River. He dove into the water but misjudged the depth.
The dive caused a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. From that day forward, Cole became a quadriplegic.
For nearly 15 years, Cole has used a wheelchair. The accident changed his life in an instant, but his story did not end there. Instead, he slowly began rebuilding his daily routine.
Simple tasks had to be learned again. He returned to school and focused on staying active. One place that became important in his new routine was the gym.
Cole began working out at the Sheltering Arms Institute rehabilitation facility in Virginia. The center allowed him to train in a space designed for people recovering from serious injuries.
Because of his condition, he sometimes needed help from trained staff while exercising. Traditional gyms were not always an option for him.
“I can’t go to Crunch Fitness,” Cole, now 30, tells PEOPLE.
It was inside that rehabilitation facility that this quadriplegic love story quietly began to take shape.
A therapist who was not looking for love
In 2017, Cole met Charisma Jamison, an inpatient therapist at Sheltering Arms. Her job was to help patients relearn daily tasks and regain independence after injuries or illnesses.
At the time, Charisma was focused on her work and the people she helped each day. Meeting someone special was not something she expected to happen at work.
Most of the patients she treated were also older than her.
“I did not think I would meet someone my age, and then I’m not going to work thinking I’m going to meet someone to date, either. I’m just going to work to help people get back to their daily life,” she said.
Cole, however, had a very different perspective. Even after his injury, he hoped to find someone to share life with.
“Everywhere I went, I was looking for my life partner. So whether it was in the gym, the rehab center or at the local pub, I was trying to find my person,” he said.
The two eventually spent time together outside the rehabilitation center. Their first date took place on December 1, 2017.
From the beginning, they felt a natural connection.
Finding common ground in an interabled relationship
Their relationship brought together different life experiences. Cole and Charisma are an interracial couple, and they also describe themselves as an interabled couple because one partner lives with a disability while the other does not.
Charisma admitted she felt uncertain early in the relationship. Dating someone from a different background raised questions about how their lives might blend together.
Cultural differences and how they were raised were things she thought about at the start.
Over time, however, they discovered something deeper. Both had experienced moments in life where they felt different from others around them. That shared understanding strengthened their bond.
As their quadriplegic love story continued, friends and family often had questions. People were curious about how their relationship worked and what their daily lives looked like.
How a YouTube channel helped share their quadriplegic love story with the world
About four months after they began dating, Charisma suggested a simple idea.
Instead of explaining their lives again and again to friends and family, they could create videos that show what life is really like.
The idea led to the creation of their YouTube channel, Roll with Cole and Charisma.
At first, the videos were meant only for family and close friends. Neither Cole nor Charisma expected their content to reach a large audience.
At the time, Charisma was still working at Sheltering Arms and later enrolled in occupational therapy school. Cole was starting a business with a college friend.
Their online videos were simply a side project.
But within a few months, something surprising happened. Their honest look at relationships, disability, and daily life began attracting viewers.
Today, the channel has around 1.2 million YouTube subscribers. Charisma has more than 430,000 Instagram followers, while Cole has about 280,000 followers on his account.
As their audience grew, social media gradually became their full-time work.
Sharing life honestly with millions
Their growing platform encouraged them to try new things and step outside their comfort zones.
“It was encouraging us to go out and do things and just try new things,” Cole recalls. “I wanted to break out of my shell, because I had put myself in one for so long, and I was tired of it. I wanted to go live life, and this seemed like a great opportunity.”
Through their channel, the couple openly discusses life with a spinal cord injury. They also answer questions about interracial and interabled relationships.
For Cole, social media provides something traditional media often cannot.
“Everyone has the power to share their story, and it’s unfiltered, and it’s not being run [by] focus groups. I think movies, they’re going to put a non-disabled actor in a wheelchair and they’re going to make sure they cut out all the ugly parts,” Cole says. “We get to share our lives exactly how we want to, and people are relating and connecting to that representation.”
Education is also part of their mission.
Charisma often speaks about how spinal cord injuries can happen suddenly and how important awareness can be. One video series on their channel shares things Cole wishes he had known before his accident.
The goal is to help people stay safe and support others who may face similar life changes.
From life-altering injury to a widely shared quadriplegic love story
Their personal journey continued to grow.
Cole proposed to Charisma in July 2019. The couple married in November 2020.
Today, they continue sharing their lives online through videos and social media posts. Their content shows the realities of love, disability, and everyday experiences.
For many viewers, their journey represents resilience, honesty, and connection.
What began with a life-changing accident has grown into a widely shared quadriplegic love story that continues to reach millions of people around the world.
