Homelessness in the US

In 2023, roughly 653,100 people in the United States were homeless on a single night, representing about 20 out of every 10,000 individuals.

Six out of ten of these individuals stayed in shelters such as emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens.

Meanwhile, the remaining four out of ten were homeless and living outdoors in places not intended for human habitation.

Moreover, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported on the same year that California had the highest number of unsheltered individuals in the nation, accounting for 49% of the total, approximately 123,423 people.

This is nearly eight times more than Florida, the state with the next highest number of unsheltered individuals.

Additionally, California had the second-highest rate of homeless people staying in unsheltered locations, with 75%, trailing only behind Hawaii with 76%.
