Video of mom’s mural painting transforming her daughter’s room into a Disney dream goes viral

A Canadian mom’s mural painting project has taken the internet by storm after transforming her daughter’s room into a hand-painted princess scene while the little girl was at preschool.

The heartwarming surprise quickly gained attention online, with many praising her creativity and artistic talent.

Rachel Lancaster took to TikTok to share how she turned her daughter’s room into a Disney princess-themed mural.

In a time-lapse video, she showed the process from start to finish, beginning with a purple background before skillfully sketching and painting classic princess characters by hand.

“I wanted to keep them more like the original princesses, the cartoonish ones with the black line work. Then I thought, why stop on one wall when I can carry it over to the other?” she said in her viral video.

To make the mural painting even more immersive, Rachel extended the design across multiple walls, adding more princesses and painting a tree with soft pink flowers to fill an empty space.

She responded to viewer feedback along the way, including questions about one princess’s dress color.

With a lighthearted approach, she explained that she intentionally chose the shade to maintain a consistent purple theme throughout the room.

The video quickly went viral, reaching over 3 million views on TikTok. Viewers were impressed by Rachel’s skill and the speed with which she completed the mural.

Many complimented her artistic abilities, while others shared playful comments.

One mom joked about napping while her daughter was at preschool. At the same time, another admired how effortlessly Rachel freehanded the detailed design.

Some viewers questioned why Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog wasn’t included in the mural painting.

In response, Rachel firmly clarified that the artwork was a personal project for her daughter, not meant to please everyone.

For the finishing touch, Rachel added delicate, fairylike butterflies before revealing the entire mural, which showcased beloved Disney princesses like Belle, Jasmine, Cinderella, Ariel, and Snow White.

She expressed her love for mural painting. She said she looks forward to creating new designs as her children’s interests evolve.

“I love the idea of painting murals for my kids so potentially in a couple years they’ll change their mind about what they like… then I get to paint another one and that sounds like a ton of fun,” she said.

Mural painting

Murals have been a form of artistic expression for thousands of years, created by painting directly onto walls or ceilings.

While the term can include paintings on fired tiles, it generally excludes mosaics unless they are part of the overall design.

Historically, from prehistoric cave paintings, murals have played a significant role in architecture and public spaces.

They became a key feature in classical cities and remain a significant form of public art today.

Though commonly seen outdoors, murals are also painted indoors, bringing creativity to various spaces.

Murals are more than artwork—they tell stories, share messages, and unite communities.

Once used mainly to decorate public and private spaces, they have become a powerful social and political expression tool.

Many also serve as visual records of historical events, preserving important moments through art.

In cities, murals can completely change a neighborhood’s atmosphere. They add color and character to dull or forgotten walls, turning them into eye-catching landmarks.

More than just decoration, murals help build a sense of community identity and unity.

Murals can transform communities, as seen in London’s Shoreditch and Brick Lane.

Once industrial areas, these neighborhoods have become cultural hubs, attracting tourists and businesses with vibrant street art that boosts the local economy.

Murals also serve as lasting tributes to history. Once a division symbol, the Berlin Wall now stands as an open-air gallery.

Many of its 105 murals were painted in 1990 to commemorate Germany’s reunification, turning a site of separation into a powerful reminder of unity.
