A ‘mansplaining’ moment went viral when a man attempted to explain golf to a female golf pro

“Mansplaining” occurs when a man condescendingly explains something to someone, typically a woman, who already understands it.

This is exactly what a viral video showed when a man attempted to correct Georgia Ball’s golf swing online, but here’s the kicker: she’s the pro, and he’s not.

In February, Georgia posted a video of a man interrupting her practice to give unsolicited advice on her swing.

The guy started his mansplaining with a polite “Excuse me” before criticizing her for swinging too slowly and affecting her game.

“What you are doing there โ€ฆ you shouldn’t be doing that,” he advised.

Despite Georgia’s attempt to explain her ongoing swing technique changes, the man interrupted her, asserting his superior knowledge.

Ignoring her explanations, he boasted about his two decades of golf experience and lectured her on improving her follow-through.

Throughout the encounter, Georgia, who has a significant Instagram following and a successful golf coaching business, showed no interest in or need for his advice.

Despite the golf pro explaining her swing change, he kept pushing his advice.

Georgia reaffirmed her commitment to making a “good” swing and demonstrated by hitting the golf ball as hard as she could.

Her flawless swing aimed to showcase her expertise to the man but failed to impress him.

Rather than acknowledging her skill, he promptly took credit for her impressive performance.

“See how much better that was?” he said.

Despite her second attempt to explain her swing change, emphasizing that top players often adjust their swings and slow down during changes, he either disagreed or refused to listen.

The man, boasting 20 years of golf experience, again took credit for her swing, shocking online viewers with his audacity.

With over 3 million likes on TikTok for her golf content, Georgia clearly didn’t need his help, even if he didn’t know who she was.

Her deliberate and controlled swing showcased her skill despite being slow.

One person called the man’s behavior “mansplaining,” while another remarked it was their first time witnessing such behavior in action.

Some commenters were outraged by the man’s audacity to advise a pro golfer without invitation, deeming it awkward or embarrassing.

One follower commended Georgia for her patience, contrasting it with their likely less tolerant reaction.

Another female golfer expressed frustration with similar experiences at the driving range, urging men to avoid offering unsolicited coaching.

How does mansplaining impact women?

Caitlin Briggs of Michigan State University led a study investigating the effects of mansplaining.

They recruited 128 volunteers who imagined being on a committee to distribute bonus funds.

Each volunteer interacted with a male or female actor who questioned their understanding of the task and proceeded to mansplain it in every scenario.

“What we found was that women largely had negative outcomes as a result of being mansplained to, whereas it didn’t affect men as much,” Caitlin noted in their research, which was published in the Journal of Business and Psychology.

She added that women volunteers often felt their competence was questioned and attributed this to gender bias, perceiving the interaction as a reflection of the person’s attitude towards their gender.

Meanwhile, male volunteers who received condescending explanations from women didn’t react similarly.

“Maybe they perceived it as ‘this person is being rude to me,’ but they didn’t perceive it any differently if it came from a man or woman, and they didn’t attribute it to a gender bias,” Caitlin said.

Research footage showed that women spoke less after condescending interactions with men, while men weren’t affected.

Briggs highlights potential long-term impacts on women’s careers due to such behavior, given the uncertain prevalence of mansplaining in workplaces.

She suggests raising awareness, incorporating mansplaining into workplace training, and monitoring meeting recordings to track interruptions or disregard for women’s input.

  1. Corrections are not wrong. one that have been in the field for over decades, well the guy would have watch and asked questions, instead of interrupting. It’s not every game or sports that requires fast mode.
