Man names estranged daughter sole beneficiary of his entire estate, but family complications follow

A woman with a troubled relationship with her father has discovered she is the sole beneficiary of her father’s will.

The unexpected news has left her unsure of how to move forward, especially after deciding to skip his funeral.

In a Reddit post, the 28-year-old woman shared that her father abandoned her and her mother when she was just 10 years old.

Over the years, he rarely reached out, and when he did, it was usually because he needed money or help.

“He remarried, had two other kids, and basically acted like I didn’t exist,” she said.

After starting a new family with two other children, he forgot about her entirely. By turning 18, she had decided to cut him out of her life for good.

In her post, the woman revealed that her father made several attempts to reconnect. Still, the interactions felt superficial, so she decided to ignore him.

When her mother passed away a few years ago, he didn’t contact her, which only reinforced her choice to cut him out of her life.

Last month, she received a call from his wife, who informed her of his sudden death. When asked to attend the funeral, she declined.

“Why should I show up to mourn someone who wasn’t there for me when I needed him?” she writes in her post.

A week after the funeral, the woman received an unexpected call from a lawyer about her father’s will.

She was informed that her father had left everything to her, including his house, savings, and car, while his wife and other children were left with nothing.

The news shocked her, as she had no idea her father had accumulated so much.

According to the lawyer, her father had felt remorseful for abandoning her. He wanted to make amends by leaving her his entire estate.

The man’s wife and children are now upset with the woman, accusing her of taking their inheritance and criticizing her for not attending the funeral.

In her post, the woman shared that she feels torn over the situation.

“On one hand, I didn’t ask for any of this. On the other, I get why they’re mad. I didn’t have a relationship with my dad, but now I’m walking away with everything, while they’re left with nothing,” she writes.

In a follow-up post, the woman explained that she returned everything to her father’s wife and family.

She recognized their anger and said she understood why they felt that way.

“What my dad did was messed up. I wouldn’t want to leave them in the position my dad left my mother and I,” she writes.

The post quickly sparked a flurry of comments, including one highlighting the irony of the situation: the woman inherited everything from her absent father yet was now seen as the villain in someone else’s story.

In response, she explained that, although it seemed like a dramatic turn of events, she had no interest in keeping the inheritance, according to his father’s will.

She described the money as uncomfortable, even calling it “dirty money.” She explained that it came from someone absent when she needed him and only tried to make amends at the last minute.

Moving on without the inheritance felt like the best choice for her, rather than being tied to her father in that way.

While others might see it as a win, she saw it as a painful reminder of everything she never had from him.

Meanwhile, some people shared their perspectives. One commenter suggested that the woman’s father seemed to be sending a defiant message to his widow and younger children while dragging her, the child he had abandoned, into the ongoing family conflict.

They expressed sympathy for her, criticizing her father for causing trouble in every family he had created and placing her in a position where she was now seen as the villain.

Another commenter pointed out that the lawyer had explained her father’s desire to make amends.

They also noted that, depending on the laws in the area, the marriage might invalidate the will, or the will made before the younger children were born could be challenged to argue that the inheritance meant for the woman should be divided among all the children.
