A loyal therapy dog from Victoria, Canada, is touching hearts around the world as he continues to wait for his late owner, five years after her passing.
Max, a 12-year-old dog, was the devoted companion of Lexi Townsin, who died just weeks before her seventh birthday.
A recent video posted on Lexi’s memorial Instagram account, @memydadandblau, shows Max running into her old bedroom, as if still searching for her.
The heartbreaking clip has gone viral, reminding people everywhere of the deep loyalty and love between a child and her therapy dog.
A therapy dog’s unbreakable bond
Lexi’s parents, Cheryl-Lynn and Troy Townsin, shared the emotional moment online, which gained millions of views. The family says Max has never stopped looking for the little girl who changed his life.
“After Lexi died, Max didn’t stop being a therapy dog, he became a comfort for all of us,” Cheryl-Lynn told Newsweek.
Lexi was born with Blau syndrome, a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the NOD2 gene. The disease leads to painful inflammation throughout the body, often affecting the skin, joints, eyes, and internal organs.
Doctors initially thought she had juvenile arthritis, a common misdiagnosis, before discovering the actual cause. Despite her illness, Lexi was known for her bright smile and determination.
“Despite living with pain every single day, Lexi rarely showed it,” Troy said.
He described her as a charismatic and loving child who inspired everyone with her energy and strength. Even in the face of grief, her family says she always chose joy.
Living with courage and love
Knowing there was no cure, the Townsin family created the Cure Blau Syndrome Foundation to help others living with the condition.
Lexi also launched her own social media page, Me, My Dad & Blau, where she shared her story to raise awareness and connect with other families.
Just before her seventh birthday in October 2019, Lexi became seriously ill after what seemed like an ordinary cold.
Doctors later discovered she had developed MAS/HLH, a rare inflammatory reaction that wasn’t caught in time.
After three days in the hospital, Lexi passed away, leaving her family—and Max—heartbroken.
Max had joined the family when Lexi was four years old. From the first night, he seemed to understand her needs and pain.
Her parents recalled how he would stay by her side during flare-ups, often trying to comfort her when she cried. Their bond grew stronger through hospital visits, sleepless nights, and long car rides.
“He was there for every car ride and road trip, mostly sitting on her lap,” Cheryl-Lynn added.
A therapy dog who still feels her presence
Years later, Max continues to demonstrate the profound impact of a therapy dog’s devotion. When the family recently returned from Norway—where they met scientists researching new treatments for Blau syndrome—Max ran straight to Lexi’s room the moment they got home.
According to Cheryl-Lynn, he began barking with excitement, almost as if he could sense Lexi was there. For the first time, she decided to give Max one of Lexi’s housecoats, the one she used to wear during their morning cuddles.
“He went straight onto it and stayed there the whole day,” she said.
That moment, captured on video, quickly spread across social media. Thousands of people left emotional comments, expressing how touched they were by Max’s loyalty and the family’s enduring strength in the face of grief.
Lexi’s legacy of love
Despite the pain of losing Lexi, her family has continued her mission to spread hope and kindness.
Her older brother, Felix, now 15, has become an advocate for medical research and awareness.
Since he was 10, he has spoken at international conferences and collaborated with scientists researching potential gene therapies for Blau syndrome.
Felix also started a campaign called A Million Acts of Love, which encouraged people around the world to perform kind deeds in Lexi’s honor.
The movement reached its goal of one million acts on what would have been her 12th birthday.
For the Townsins, every small act of kindness helps keep Lexi’s spirit alive. Through it all, Max has remained by their side—an unwavering reminder of love, comfort, and healing.
“Through it all, Max has been there. He witnessed Lexi’s life, the hardest moments and the happiest ones, and he has witnessed everything our family has done in her memory.”
Even after five years, this therapy dog’s quiet devotion continues to move people everywhere.
