Grandma raising grandson injured in a devastating crash is surprised with gifts from Secret Santa

Debi, a grandma who is raising her grandson after he suffered a life-changing traumatic brain injury, along with his three siblings, was surprised with an early Christmas gift.

The thoughtful gesture came from a Secret Santa just days before her birthday.

Debi, a dedicated grandma raising her grandson Christian, has faced numerous challenges since a tragic car crash left Christian, then 10, with a life-threatening traumatic brain injury.

The accident killed the driver, and Christian spent six weeks fighting for his life in the hospital.

Christian then spent 13 months at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, with Debi by his side through his recovery.

Despite the intense care Christian needed, Debi ensured her other three grandchildren were looked after by trusted family and friends. For two years, Christian was in residential care due to his needs.

After years of hard work, Debi’s dream of having Christian live with her again came true when she moved into a new home, taking Christian back under her roof. However, the house still needed to be more sparsely furnished.

Meanwhile, East Idaho News‘ Surprise Squad spreads holiday cheer each year with their “Secret Santa” program, brightening the season with acts of kindness.

This year, Debi received a generous surprise when a Secret Santa gifted her $8,000 for furniture at Ashley Furniture, helping her purchase essential items for her home.

In addition, Debi received $4,000 in gift cardsโ€”$2,000 for groceries, clothes, and other necessities from Fred Meyer, and $1,000 in gas cards to assist with transportation for her grandson Christianโ€™s medical appointments.

When the surprise was revealed, Debi was overwhelmed with emotion. “I can hug you, but I’d probably crush you,” she said, laughing through tears.

The Secret Santa gift wasn’t the first act of kindness Debi had experienced. “We struggle so hard on my retirement, Social Security,” she said. “And when we got this home, I felt blessed.”

Despite Christian’s lengthy recovery and the challenges he still facesโ€”he has the mental capacity of a toddler and requires constant careโ€”he has made significant progress.

“He’s walking,” Debi said. “He doesn’t talk much, but he’s proving science wrong.”

The Secret Santa also left Debi with heartfelt words. “He wants you to know that you’re loved, that you’re cared about, that someone is aware of you,” said Nate, the host of the reveal. “We hope you can use this to bless your family.”

“I don’t even know what to say,” Debi, still overwhelmed.

For Debi, who has spent years caring for Christian and her other grandchildren, the gift reminded her that she wasn’t alone.

“I’m just so overwhelmed,” she said, fighting back tears. “Nobody’s ever given us anything like this. I’m just so happy.”

The Secret Santa’s thoughtful gesture reminded Debi that people care about her family.

“Better than money, right?” Nate said, emphasizing that the support was from the heart.

This Christmas, Debi, and her grandchildren will have the warmth of a fully furnished home, thanks to the kindness of a Secret Santa who made their holiday season a little brighter.

“Thank you so much, whoever did this,” Debi said. “I don’t even know how to begin to ever pay it forward. Thank you and bless you, we love you.”
