All packaged foods and drinks must list their ingredients, and common allergens like peanuts, shellfish, and dairy require even clearer labeling.

These guidelines help families avoid severe allergic reactions by making informed choices.

In addition to labeling, the FDA also advises food makers and consumers on handling allergy risks.

The agency regularly checks food facilities and samples products to ensure that labels are accurate and that safety practices are followed.

This includes steps to prevent allergen cross-contact—when allergens accidentally end up in foods that should be allergen-free.

If a problem is found, the FDA moves quickly. It works with companies to recall unsafe products and immediately warns the public.

In some cases, it can even remove products from store shelves or block unsafe imports to keep the food supply safe.

Federal law requires food companies to clearly list major allergens on packaged foods to keep people with food allergies safe.

Labels must name the allergen’s source, and for items like tree nuts, fish, and shellfish, the specific type—such as almonds, cod, or shrimp—must also be included.

This information must be easy to spot, either listed in parentheses after the ingredient name—like “whey (milk)”—or in a “contains” statement, such as “Contains wheat, milk, and soy.”

These rules are part of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) and apply to grocery store products and foods packaged in advance at restaurants.

However, they don’t apply to items packaged after a customer orders them, such as a made-to-order sandwich.

Shoppers may also notice optional warnings like “may contain peanuts” or “made in a facility that processes tree nuts.”

While not required by law, these labels are meant to alert people about the risk of cross-contact, which can happen when allergens accidentally enter other foods during production.

The FDA says these advisory warnings should only be used when companies follow strict safety steps and are not a substitute for proper food-handling practices.

Harley cleared my brother’s container and alerted to my daughter’s container for traces of peanuts. So my daughter ended up with the sandwich with the side salad, and my brother ended up with the other sandwich with the side of fries. None of these items should have had any peanuts or traces of peanuts (and we alerted the restaurant to the peanut allergy when we ordered), but cross-contact happens. It was likely from the fryer or, if not made in-house at the restaurant, the manufacturing process involved with the sweet potato fries. It was a huge save.
