Ex-husband moves back in to care for ex-wife 20 years after divorce amid her stage 4 cancer battle

A viral TikTok video showed a different kind of love between a former couple who were divorced for two decades.

Megan shared that her mom got stage 4 cancer, but her dad still came to look after his ex.

The TikTok video shows her dad helping her mom with her exercises, watching over her as she climbs stairs, and spending time with her.

Megan’s parents met in California over 30 years ago when her father, from Hawaii, was stationed there for military service.

They had two children, Megan and her older brother, but separated shortly after Megan’s birth.

Her father returned to Hawaii, while her mother raised them as a single parent, working as an elementary school teacher.

For more than 20 years, they lived separate lives until a devastating cancer diagnosis brought them back together.

“Fast forward 20+ years later to my mother’s diagnosis – my father was one of the first people by her side when she was released from the hospital,” Megan shared via GoFundMe.

Megan, who works full-time in domestic violence services and is pursuing a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, moved back in with her mom to help care for her.

Feeling overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving while balancing work and studies, Megan struggled.

Recognizing her plight, Megan’s father, despite living in Hawaii, flew to California and moved in with them to provide support in a touching display of love.

Megan’s poignant TikTok video reveals her parents’ united fight against cancer.

Despite their divorce over two decades ago, her dad remains steadfast by her mom’s side upon her Stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

He also offers companionship through shared activities like reading and playing video games.

Megan revealed that she saw her parents living together for the first time in her 27 years.

Taking on numerous responsibilities, her dad assists her mom with exercises, cooks meals takes her for drives, and handles medication pickups.

Megan adds that during this period, her parents enjoy long conversations, playful bickering reminiscent of their married days, and shared laughter.

“They helped me see them as they were when they were younger,” she said.

Megan’s parents coming together to deal with her mom’s cancer not only helped her mom heal but also helped her deal with her childhood traumas, contributing to her own healing.

The TikTok video, with over 8.1 million views in just a week, highlights the enduring power of love.

Despite Megan’s parents no longer being romantically involved, their bond remains strong.

What’s more, other people have shared their similar stories of love after divorce in comments.

For instance, Hi_Dee Aye’s parents expressed love for each other during their mother’s final days, even after 30 years of divorce.

MVP10210’s father held their mother’s hand as she passed, despite being divorced for 25 years.

Lon recounted how their parents, divorced for over 20 years, reunited during a hospital stay.

Brenda Carmichael Da also shared her experience of caring for her ex-husband during hospice.

“I took care of my ex-husband during hospice. I loved the life and children he gave me. I owed it to him,” Brenda shared.

Megan’s parents’ story serves as a poignant reminder that while marriages may end, the love shared between partners doesn’t simply disappear.

Despite the end of their marriage, Megan’s parents demonstrate that the love they once had still holds significance, even after over 20 years.

As one commenter wisely noted, “Love has so many forms. This one is pretty freaking great.”

“Some people are better friends than lovers, it’s so great they have each other,” another viewer said.

Their story is a powerful testament to the enduring nature of love and its lasting impact.

Ultimately, it underscores the unbreakable family bond, regardless of the status of the romantic relationship.
