Loyal dog runs 4 miles to get help for owner trapped in car after it plunges into ravine

An auto crash in an Oregon ravine left Brandon Garrett trapped in car. This harrowing situation spurred his loyal dog to run four miles for help, ultimately leading to his rescue.

Brandon Garrett was driving with his four dogs along Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, a winding road through the Wallowa Mountains when he couldn’t navigate a curve last week.

This caused his car to crash off the embankment on June 2, as the Baker County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Despite surviving the accident, he was left stranded, awaiting assistance.

Garrett’s dog, Blue, ran four miles to the campsite where Garrett and his brother were staying, alerting them that something was wrong, as per the sheriff’s office.

After running nearly four miles, the dog found other campers on June 3 at 9:30 am.

The family began searching for Brandon and located the car crash site. Still, the rugged terrain prevented them from reaching him.

They then called emergency rescuers for help.

“The reporting party explained that his brother, Brandon Garrett, had not made it to his camp yesterday afternoon. Family members located his vehicle this morning but could not reach it due to the terrain,” said the sheriff’s office statement.

Rescuers reached Garrett with chainsaws, used a blanket and rope to bring him out of the ravine, and found him and his three dogs alive, only 100 yards from the car crash site.

Brandon was airlifted to a regional hospital, and according to Baker County sheriff’s spokesperson Ashley McClay, he was discharged from the hospital on June 10 and is now recovering at home.

“He’s got a cracked ankle, and his body itself is just really bruised and battered,” Tyree Garrett, Brandon’s brother, told The New York Times. “So it’s going to take him a while at his age to get back on his feet.”

One dog underwent surgery for a broken hip and injured femur, while another had two breaks in its leg.

Brandon’s rescue, which gained quick attention, prompted many to praise Blue in the comments of the sheriff’s post about the car crash.

Farrah Huff Chastain called it “amazing” and suggested giving the dog a bone for saving his owner.

Sharon Foster Bessey described Blue’s actions as “unbelievable.” He suggested the dog deserved a medal for finding everyone alive and rescued, concluding it was a wonderful ending to the story.

Ways dogs can save humans

For centuries, dogs have played vital roles in human history across different cultures, Fi noted.

In ancient times, they were essential for hunting, protection, and companionship, and they were highly valued in Egypt and Rome.

As societies evolved, dogs were bred for specialized tasks, such as herding and guarding.

Throughout history, the strong bond between humans and dogs has made them indispensable companions in human civilization.

1. Dog companions

The bond between humans and dogs is scientifically supported, as interacting with dogs releases oxytocin, creating joy and connection.

Dogs also benefit mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Petting a dog lowers cortisol levels and induces relaxation, providing therapeutic effects in various settings such as homes, hospitals, and therapy sessions.

2. Search and rescue

Dogs play a crucial role in search and rescue missions due to their sharp sense of smell and agility.

They undergo intense training to find people buried under rubble, lost in the wilderness, or even detect human scent on water.

The bond between handler and dog enhances communication and trust, making rescues more effective.

During natural disasters, search and rescue dogs become heroes, navigating tough terrain to save lives, showcasing the exceptional human-dog partnership.

3. Medical assistance

Dogs provide more than companionship; they are essential partners for people with health conditions.

Medical assistance dogs are trained to detect changes in their owner’s physical state and offer support, even life-saving help.

For example, epilepsy assistance dogs can sense pre-seizure changes and warn their owners. In contrast, diabetes-alert dogs detect blood sugar changes.

They also aid people with mobility issues by retrieving items, opening doors, and assisting with balance.

The deep bond between these dogs and their owners, based on trust and understanding, makes them vital lifelines for those facing health challenges.
