A viral video of a dog grieving a lost owner has touched the hearts of many people online after being shared by Stephany Acosta of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Stephany posted the emotional footage on her TikTok account, @steph.yourbff, capturing a deeply personal moment with her late mother’s beloved pet.

The video features Coco, a nine-year-old Bichon, in a quiet, reflective moment. As the clip unfolds, the small dog appears to realize that her best friend—Stephany’s mother—is no longer there.
For many viewers, the scene offers a powerful reminder of the deep emotional bond animals share with the people they love.
A bond between a dog and her favorite human
The video showing a dog grieving its lost owner quickly resonated with viewers online. In the short clip, Coco looks around with what many describe as a sad and confused expression. The moment reflects how closely pets can connect with their humans.

For Stephany, the experience is still very raw.
She told Newsweek that her mother passed away on September 14, 2024. Stephany described the loss as the most painful experience she has ever faced.
During this difficult time, Coco has remained close to her. In many ways, the two have leaned on each other for comfort.
Stephany described the Bichon as sweet, playful, and very loving. Since her mother’s passing, the dog has also grown very close to Stephanys’ daughter, who was the only grandchild of Stephany’s mother.
Experts say dogs can feel loss too
Experts say it is not unusual for a dog grieving its lost owner to show signs of sadness or confusion.
Coco had been a constant companion to Stephany’s mother for seven-and-a-half years. According to Stephany, her mother rarely went anywhere without the little dog by her side.

She often took Coco to the beach, on vacations, out to eat, and even on quick errands to the store. Because her mother had a busy schedule, Coco often rode along in the car with her.
Those everyday adventures helped them build a strong connection.
A scary twist before a happy reunion
However, Coco’s story took a difficult turn shortly after Stephany’s mother passed away.
Without Stephany’s permission, another family member gave the dog away. For weeks, the beloved pet had been gone from the family.
Thankfully, the situation eventually had a happy ending.
Six weeks after her mother’s death, Stephany was able to bring Coco back home. When they were reunited, she said the dog was clearly happy to see her again.
For her, having Coco back felt like reconnecting with an important piece of her mother’s memory.

The emotional car ride that sparked the viral video
The viral video of the dog grieving its lost owner was filmed on the very day Stephany picked up Coco.
She drove to pick up the dog in her mother’s old car. The vehicle held many memories of the trips Coco used to take with her mom.
That is when she had a realization.
Her mother had left for work one morning, and Coco never saw her again.
The car had always been a happy place for them, filled with road trips and everyday adventures. Stephany wondered if the vehicle might still carry her mother’s scent, giving Coco a chance to understand what had happened.
So she pulled out her phone and started recording.

Coco’s reaction touched thousands of viewers
As the video begins, Coco jumps into the car with excitement. She heads to the back seat first, sniffing around the familiar space.
Then she moves to the passenger seat, where she usually sat during rides with her owner.
The video’s caption suggests that Coco realized her owner was “actually gone.”
Stephany later described the moment in detail.
“At first she was excited when she saw the car she ran over, she hopped in the backseat first and was sniffing around and then made her way to the passenger where she usually sat,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s silly, but I feel like maybe she caught her scent but it was old and maybe that’s what made her realize something was wrong. The way she sits back and opens up her eyes just made me feel like in that instant she knew she was gone.”

A dog’s powerful sense of smell
Scientists say a dog’s nose may explain why moments like this can happen.
According to UCLA Health, a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 and 100,000 times stronger than a human’s. While people have about 6 million scent receptors, dogs can have as many as 300 million.
Researchers also note that a dog’s brain spends 40 times more power processing smells than the human brain does.
Because of this, it is possible Coco picked up a faint trace of her old friend’s scent inside the car.
For Stephany, that possibility makes the moment feel even more meaningful.
Finding comfort after loss
Today, Coco continues to bring comfort to the family.
Stephany often refers to the dog as her “little sister,” a reminder of how much Coco meant to her mother.
Despite the heartbreak, having the small Bichon nearby has helped her hold on to the memories they shared.
“My mom was my best friend, I love her and always will. Coco meant the world to her and it just feels right she’s here with me,” she said.
For many viewers, the story of this dog grieving its lost owner shows just how deep the connection between humans and their pets can truly be.

@steph.yourbff We both cried actually ,and we’ve been inseparable since that day. I’m so grateful to have her, she was my mom’s baby. When she passed everyone asked me about Coco because to know my mom was to know her love and obsession with her Coquis. While it wasn’t my initial intention to keep her i’m thankful for my husband that this is where she ended up. #fyp #grief #coco #dogs #wemissyoumom ♬ original sound – solo.mp3
