The story began in 2022 when True was only five years old. Doctors had diagnosed him with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, a rare and serious condition in which the right side of the heart does not develop properly.

Because of this, his heart struggled to pump blood through his body, and he needed major surgery.

At the time, True was living under the care of social services.

On the day of his heart operation at Children’s Nebraska, something heartbreaking happened. For reasons no one fully understood, the little boy arrived at the hospital alone.

His case worker had fallen ill with COVID-19. Because True had been transferred from another rehabilitation center, there was no adult there to stand beside him.

That is when anesthesiologist Dr. Amy Beethe noticed him quietly waiting in the preoperative area.

“He was just sitting there all alone,” Beethe told CBS News. “No adult with him at all.”

For a five-year-old child about to undergo heart surgery, the moment was overwhelming. True later said he had “no idea” why he was by himself that day. Instead of holding a parent’s hand, he faced the frightening experience alone.

A moment that stayed in a doctor’s heart

The surgery lasted nearly seven hours.

Throughout the procedure, Dr. Beethe could not stop thinking about the quiet little boy she had seen earlier. As she cared for him during the operation, one thought kept returning to her mind: what would happen to True after he recovered?

She knew he did not have a stable home waiting for him.

Even though Dr. Beethe and her husband, Ryan, were already raising six children, the feeling persisted. By the time the surgery ended and True was safely moved to recovery, she knew she needed to talk to her husband.

“After I dropped True off in recovery, I called my husband and I just said, ‘We need to have a talk when we get home. I need you to have an open mind,'” Beethe said.

At first, Ryan was understandably concerned. Adding another child would mean raising seven kids in total—no small responsibility.

But once he heard True’s story, his heart shifted. The couple realized that the boy needed stability, care, and a real home.

Ryan later said it “just felt right.”

First, her sister and brother-in-law stepped forward to adopt True’s sister, TyLynn. Then her sister-in-law and her husband adopted another sister, Tyra. Soon after, a colleague from the hospital opened their home to two more siblings, Tacari and Malia.

Only one child remained—a girl named Laney.

Once again, Dr. Beethe spoke with her husband about expanding their family. Soon, Laney also became part of the Beethe household.

Thanks to the compassion of one doctor and the support of those around her, all six siblings now live with relatives or close family friends. They can see each other, grow up together, and stay connected.

It is a powerful reminder that sometimes one act of kindness can ripple far beyond a single moment.
