This is your journey: ‘Stop comparing and do not let anyone rush you with their timelines’

In today’s generation, chasing success seems to be a lot harder than before. Especially that you feel the pressure of paying your car loan, house mortgage, college loans and other financial responsibilities.

Now that everything is posted on social media sites, it is hard not to be envious of the ‘achievements’ of your friends, classmates, office mates, more so if your age is quite close to theirs.

Sometimes you can’t stop comparing, you cannot be helped but wonder, what are they doing right, that you are doing wrong?

Good thing that Jay Shetty, a former monk of three years who is now an influential storyteller and motivational speaker, shares the secret behind achieving real success in a powerful and moving video.

The former monk is all about shattering conventional time line. Jay Shetty challenged the belief that in 15 years that grade 11 students are already 30, their path, their life will be set. Because in reality, as per the motivational speaker, we have our own pace and timeline.

“I know people who graduated from college at 21, and didn’t get a job until they were 27. I know people who graduated from college late at 25 and found work immediately. I know people who never went to university but found what they love at 18. I know people who took gap years and found their purpose.

I know people who were sure at 16 and changed their mind at 26. Everything in life happens according to our time, our clock. You may look at some of your friends and think that they are ahead of you. Maybe some of them you feel you are behind.”

Everything happens at their own pace, they have their own time and clock and so do you.”

As an evidence to his perspective that success is achieved depending on your own pace and timeline, the motivational speaker shared stories of people we look up to today, and surprisingly, they too achieved their dreams in their own clock.

Mark Cuban was a bartender at 25, while J.K Rowling, the creator of the world of magic and wizardry, Harry Potter, was rejected by 12 publishers. Jack Ma started Ali Baba when he was 35 years old; Morgan Freeman did not even get his big break until he reached 52 years old. Ortega launched Zara when he was 39, and Richard Branson founded and established Virgin Group when he was 34 years old.

See what these successful people we look up to and admire have in common? Their names did not get big over night! They patiently waited and persistently chased after their dreams. They did not let challenges discourage them and so they did not give up.

Jay Shetty reiterated: “Getting your degree after 25 is still an achievement. Not being married at 30 but still happy is still beautiful. Starting a family at 35 is still possible. Buying a house at 40 is still great. I want you to be able to create meaningful, purposeful, fulfilling lives for yourselves. And learn how to use that to make an impact and a difference in the lives of others.”

Truly, our life will never be measured by the number of figures we can make in a year, or the number of people who recognizes our name. At the end of the day, what matters most is how meaningful and fulfilling our lives are and the impact that we have on others.

Do what you love and do everything with love, and everything that matters will follow. May you keep in mind the wise words of Jay Shetty the next time you feel envious of the career and achievement of the people around you.

Watch Jay Shetty’s powerful words of encouragement that will surely inspire you to achieve success patiently at your own timeline.
