A determined dad
Hurricane Helene, a category 4 storm, tore through five states, leaving widespread chaos.
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia were all battered by the storm’s powerful winds and heavy rain.
One determined dad walks for hours to reach his daughter’s wedding amid the destruction.

David Jones, from South Carolina, faced a difficult journey to Tennessee. Still, he remained committed to being there for his daughter’s special day.
Despite the storm, David refused to let anything stop him from walking her down the aisle.
David’s usual two-hour drive from South Carolina to Tennessee became a seven-hour struggle due to a devastating hurricane blocking or destroying roads.

Determined to make his daughter’s 11 AM wedding, he set out the night before. Despite his efforts, detours along Interstate 26 slowed him down.
When he finally reached the Tennessee border, a state trooper informed him that storm damage made it impossible to continue driving.
Rather than turning back, David chose to continue his journey on foot. At 2 AM, with only his cell phone flashlight to guide him, he started a 30-mile trek through the darkness, determined to reach his daughter’s wedding on time.

As a former marathon runner, this determined dad was used to long distances and felt prepared for the challenge.
However, as he walked, the journey proved more difficult than anticipated.
“It just… it’s awful. And I can tell you a lot about the mud and the debris fields where I have to climb six, seven-foot-tall piles of debris of old fences and huge trees and it was just a tangled mess and dead-end roads and all kinds of things,” he said.

David faced an unexpected adventure on his journey. Alone in the dark, he navigated through hurricane debris and, at one point, got stuck in mud up to his knees.
In a close call, workers clearing the roads with a backhoe almost hit him, as they couldn’t see him in the shadows. After narrowly escaping the swinging arm of the machine, he managed to free himself.
His determination remained strong—nothing would stop him from walking his daughter down the aisle.
“I’d have to climb 6, 7-foot tall mounds of debris, old fences, huge trees and tangled…just tangled mess,” he shared.
While trekking to his daughter’s wedding, Jones found a reflective stake to help cars see him in the dark. His determination paid off when he arrived on time for the ceremony.

Jones cleaned up so well before seeing her in her wedding dress that she had no idea he had spent over five hours walking through the night to be there for her special day.
Parents often go to great lengths for their children, especially for important milestones.
As many affected by the hurricane try to rebuild their lives, the story of a father who wouldn’t miss his daughter’s big day shines as a symbol of hope in the aftermath of the disaster.
After learning about her father’s incredible journey, David’s daughter felt deeply grateful for his determination.

In an interview with a news station, she expressed her emotions: “It’s so emotionally moving to know my dad loves me so much that he would go through all of that to be at my wedding.”
During the wedding reception, David presented his daughter and new son-in-law with the reflective stake he used on his challenging journey, a reminder of how much he loved his daughter.
Although he modestly insists he did nothing heroic, this incredible story will likely be shared for generations.
