How do you know if you are dating a psychopath, here are 6 red flags to watch for

Dating a psychopath can be deceptive because they often seem charming and ordinary.

They blend into daily life, appearing friendly and confident, but they lack a conscience. This allows them to manipulate others without guilt.

While they may initially seem like the perfect partner, the relationship can quickly spiral into emotional turmoil and control.

Abigail Marsh, a psychology and neuroscience professor at Georgetown University and co-founder of Psychopathy Is, emphasizes that psychopathy is more common than people realize. “Everybody knows someone with psychopathy,” she told USA TODAY.

Psychopathy is more common than many realize, with Marsh adding that most people likely know someone with the condition.

Psychopaths lack empathy, guilt, or remorse, allowing them to manipulate others without hesitation.

These traits can help them succeed in influential careers. Still, they also make them dangerously appealing in relationships, according to clinical and forensic neuropsychologist Judy Ho.

“Some of the psychopath tactics for how to get close to people and gain their trust, it can feel very alluring in the beginning,” Ho says.

Ho added that psychopathy affects about 1-3% of the general population, with the percentage rising to 6-8% among leaders and executives.

Psychopaths often make others feel deeply understood and appreciated at first, which can be highly persuasive.

This initial charm can cause people to miss early warning signs, making it easier to overlook troubling behavior and fail to recognize the hidden dangers beneath the surface.

Psychopathy explained

Psychopathy is often linked to antisocial personality disorder and is marked by boldness, impulsiveness, and a fearless attitude.

However, Marsh explains that the key trait is a lack of empathy.

Psychopaths are emotionally detached and show little concern for others, making it easier for them to manipulate or harm without guilt.

Psychopathy is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, and not all psychopaths come from troubled backgrounds, according to Marsh.

Ho adds that psychopathy exists on a spectrum. Some individuals with these traits can thrive in leadership positions, helping drive organizations forward.

However, as the severity increases, the behavior becomes more concerning. At this extreme end, these individuals tend to lack empathy, view others as means to an end, and show strong narcissistic tendencies.

They may become defensive or upset when criticized, even if the feedback is meant to be constructive.

Dating a psychopath typically means being with someone focused solely on their own goals, without concern for the harm they cause.

While they lack empathy, psychopaths may still pursue relationships if they serve their needs, such as financial gain, covering up their actions, or fulfilling sexual desires.

Ho explains that this behavior is typical among serial killers and mass murderers, who often appear to lead normal lives.

Many were married, had children, and held jobs to avoid raising suspicion in their communities.

This ability to blend in allowed them to hide their true nature while continuing their harmful actions.

Many psychopaths, like narcissists, seek admiration. Still, Marsh explains that instead of boosting their egos, they use it as a tool to achieve their goals.

While some psychopaths believe they can outsmart others, Ho points out they are not necessarily more intelligent than the average person.

Marsh emphasizes that for psychopaths, the ultimate focus is on achieving their goals. They value admiration, status, and esteem because these can help them get what they want.

How do you know if you are dating a psychopath?

Psychopaths are often difficult to recognize, with their manipulative behavior typically showing up only when they slip up, Marsh explains.

To help spot the signs, here are some key red flags to watch for if you suspect your date might be a psychopath.

1. Their generosity seems strange

Psychopaths often use gifts as a way to manipulate others, Marsh explains. While their generosity may seem thoughtful, it usually comes with strings attached. By giving someone exactly what they want, they create a sense of obligation, making it harder for the person to refuse future requests. In the end, their kindness is just another tool for control.

2. They will isolate you

Ho explains that as the relationship progresses, they gradually isolate you from the people and activities that once played a significant role in your life.

3. They have unique ways of love bombing

Ho explains that when dating a psychopath, their tactics go beyond excessive affection. Instead of general love bombing, they focus on something deeply personal, making it seem like they are committed to improving that part of your life.

4. They’ll control you

Ho explains that it usually begins with a simple request, such as asking you to share your phone’s location so they can ensure you get home safely. However, this request becomes more demanding over time, evolving into a desire to track your location constantly.

5. It’s all about you at the beginning

Ho points out that, unlike narcissists who seek the spotlight, psychopaths tend to focus on you during the early stages of dating, but with a hidden purpose. “It’s all very strategic,” she explains. They ask questions to learn about your weaknesses and emotional pain, and to use that information to manipulate and pull you closer to them.

6. They can’t keep long-term commitments

Ho explains that psychopaths often have trouble with long-term commitments, such as jobs or relationships. It could be a warning sign if your date has a patchy work history or gaps in their background.

“They kind of jump from job to job and relationship to relationship,” she says, adding that when they don’t get what they want, they quickly walk away, making it difficult to see their worst behavior.
