A touching moment between a father and his son moved viewers online as they shared an emotional hug before the father’s arm amputation.
Shaun Lemberg, 32, was preparing for surgery after being diagnosed with sarcoma in May 2024.
His battle against aggressive cancer began with six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by five weeks of radiation therapy to stop its spread.
The heartfelt exchange before his operation resonated deeply, capturing the challenges of his journey.

Shaun’s battle with cancer took a devastating turn when doctors discovered that his tumor had spread into a major artery supplying blood to his right arm, his wife, Isla, told Newsweek.
Despite months of aggressive treatment, the cancer continued to advance.
With no other options left, doctors determined that amputating his entire arm was the only way to save his life.
“The surgeon tried to think of how he might be able to get rid of the tumor while keeping the arm, but ultimately he couldn’t guarantee he would be able to remove all of the cancer if he kept the arm,” Isla from Tauranga, New Zealand, said.

She also said that doctors warned that Shaun’s cancer was highly aggressive and could return if it wasn’t completely removed.
To give him the best chance of survival, they determined that surgery was the only option.
On January 29, just before the procedure, Shaun shared an emotional hug with his 17-month-old son, Archie.
The father of two lifted his youngest child into the air, cherishing a final moment before the life-changing operation.
Although Shaun was at peace with his decision to undergo amputation, his wife, Isla, described it as an emotional experience for the family.
She said lifting their son, Archie, before surgery meant everything to him and gave him the strength to move forward.

Now in recovery, Shaun is adjusting to his new reality. His sons, Archie and Ezra, have been especially curious about their father’s changed appearance as he navigates life after the surgery.
Isla, known on TikTok as @islarachael, shared a touching video of Shaun holding Archie with both arms “for the last time.”
The emotional moment resonated with viewers, quickly gaining over 588,000 views and 27,000 likes.
The outpouring of support has connected Isla with others who have faced similar challenges.
She expressed gratitude for the kindness and encouragement from the online community.

In the weeks following his surgery, Shaun Lemberg has been adjusting to life with one arm, and his wife, Isla, has shared his progress through TikTok videos.
While things are different, he continues to give a warm, emotional hug and connect with his children in new ways.
His story has touched many on social media, with users praising his strength and resilience.
Some shared their own experiences with complex medical journeys, while others highlighted the quiet sacrifices fathers make for their families.
One commenter offered reassurance, saying, “It’ll just be a different kind of huggle.”

What is sarcoma?
Sarcoma is a rare cancer that develops in connective tissues like bones, muscles, and blood vessels, according to WebMD.
Unlike carcinomas, which affect organs, sarcomas are most commonly found in the arms and legs. Still, they can also appear in other parts of the body.
More than 50 types of sarcoma are classified into two main groups: soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas, also known as osteosarcomas.
In 2024, experts predict around 13,590 new cases of soft tissue sarcoma and 900 cases of bone sarcoma in the U.S.

Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the tumor, sometimes combined with other medical approaches depending on the cancer’s severity and location.
Low-grade soft tissue sarcomas are often curable with surgery alone since they are less likely to spread. However, more aggressive sarcomas are more difficult to treat.
For osteosarcoma, survival rates range from 60% to 75% if the cancer remains in its original location.
The likelihood of a complete recovery increases if doctors can completely remove the tumor through surgery.
