Fed up with rising rents and the instability of short-term housing, Joy—an independent traveler with a creative spirit—decided to build a customized house that matched her lifestyle.
The result was a two-loft tiny home designed for comfort, flexibility, and affordability. After years of life on the road in an RV, she finally found a place to call home.
Now living in California, Joy says the shift to tiny living has saved her money and brought peace of mind, mental clarity, and a stronger sense of freedom.

A creative journey toward a customized house
Joy’s path to homeownership didn’t follow the usual route of loans and large houses.
Instead, her search for stability and simplicity led her to create a customized house tailored to her life as a solo traveler.

After facing years of high rent and expensive short-term stays, she knew something had to change.
“I didn’t want to live out of a suitcase, and it was super expensive to rent a place,” Joy said.
She had spent years in RVs, which gave her mobility but came with trade-offs, especially regarding comfort and upkeep.

“Living in the RVs over so much time, the roofs, the water, the mold,” she recalled.
Kitchens in RVs never quite felt like home either. However, a significant mold problem in her last RV pushed her over the edge.
“I was just baffled it was so bad, and I was like, ‘That’s it, I’m done with RVs.'”

That moment sparked her interest in tiny homes—specifically, a permanent, thoughtfully designed, customized house that could bring her peace and stability.
Her new home is now a personal sanctuary that blends purpose with personality.
Inside the customized house — features, layout, and cost
Joy’s customized house is a small but well-designed two-loft tiny home. It was built with flexibility, comfort, and long-term savings in mind.

Though exact measurements weren’t given, the layout uses every inch wisely and supports her lifestyle.
Solid wood features give the home a strong, lasting feel—something Joy says sets it apart from the “fake wood” materials used in many RVs.
One standout element is the dual loft setup. The main loft is her bedroom, while the second is for storage or guests.

This design helps separate different parts of her life, even in a small space.
She also made sure the ceiling heights worked for her needs.
“The amount of times I’m in the loft, I’m not needing to walk around, so I would rather the space be down here than up there,” she explained.
Ventilation was another priority. With windows on both sides of each loft, the home enjoys a steady cross breeze.

“That’s one of the big selling points for me is that both lofts have open windows where you can get airflow,” she said.
She also avoided installing a roof window to prevent leaks. The home stays comfortable thanks to strong insulation and a quiet Mr. Cool mini-split system.
“It pulls out any humidity in the air within like 10 minutes, I swear, because it is so efficient,” Joy said.

Though the upfront cost of building the customized house wasn’t shared, Joy noted that ditching rent has saved her a lot of money in the long run.
Compared to the maintenance costs of RVs and the high price of temporary rentals, her tiny home is a practical and affordable solution.
A cozy living room and bright loft design
The main living area in Joy’s customized house serves multiple roles, offering comfort and flexibility.

Her favorite piece is a couch that doubles as a futon—ideal for relaxing and sleeping. She also stores her old-school CD player nearby for mindful mornings.
“In the morning, I like to not turn my devices on… I like to listen to motivational CDs or something just where I’m not connected to the world yet,” she said.
Another handy item is her rolling cart, which helps her stay organized. “I’m really into the rollers because… they’re easy to move around.”

The two lofts are small but well-used. One fits a full mattress and is her main sleeping area.
The second, above her office space, currently holds a twin mattress. The dual loft setup was a big reason she chose this customized house.
It lets her divide sleeping, storage, and working areas in a compact layout.

Airflow remains a top priority. Both lofts benefit from windows on either side.
“I love the dual windows for the breeze, I’m all about airflow,” she said.
The customized kitchen that suits her needs
Joy’s kitchen is one of her favorite parts of the customized house.
“The kitchen, I mean this one by far was the best I’d seen because it just has two counter space options,” she shared.

Unlike standard layouts, her kitchen is built for flexibility. Joy chose not to install fixed appliances so she could use her own.
“Because I like flexibility and I have a lot of different appliances… I could put [them] on top of the fridge and it would still be out of the way.”
The kitchen is compact but cheerful, with solid wood drawers that open smoothly, unlike the lockable ones found in RVs.

Storage is plentiful, and she can keep her tools and gadgets close at hand.
The only issue? The small fridge. Joy, who gets monthly deliveries from her organic produce co-op, sometimes runs out of space.
But overall, she calls it a “happy kitchen” where everything feels just right. “I have the room to do everything I need… it’s just a happy kitchen.”
A bathroom built for comfort
The bathroom in Joy’s customized house is bigger than most would expect in a tiny home.

“I think it’s quite large compared to many of the bathrooms that I’ve saw with the tiny homes,” she said.
But the real selling point? A full-sized bathtub. This was a dream come true for someone used to tiny RV showers.
“This being the number one selling point… the bathtub,” she said.

The bath is paired with a green, energy-efficient water heater that can handle multiple uses daily, depending on her propane setup.
Outside the bathroom is a closet where she removed the washer to install shelves. Joy now prefers to do her laundry every few weeks at a laundromat.
“I can get it done in like 45 minutes at a place versus here doing it all the time in the smaller units,” she explained.
Why her customized house changed everything

Joy’s decision to move from an RV into a customized house wasn’t just about saving money but about finding stability, wellness, and freedom.
Her home reflects her values and lifestyle in every corner. The peace and clarity she now experiences are some of the most significant rewards.
“I think it’s very surprising how much clearing stuff out really helps with just mental clarity,” she said.
From a creative vision to a carefully crafted living space, Joy’s story shows how a customized house can offer more than shelter—it can become a life-changing sanctuary.
