A daring couple who chose to buy an abandoned house for restoration without stepping inside has stunned the internet with their discoveries.
While initially planned to renovate the run-down property, they were entirely unprepared for the surprising finds waiting inside.
Ray, 57, and Tracey, 53, a couple from Chicago, were drawn to the lakeside charm of New Buffalo, Michigan, where they purchased a second home years ago.
Three years ago, they noticed the house next door had been abandoned. Instead of watching it fall into disrepair, they decided to restore it.

Speaking to Newsweek, Tracey explained their passion for renovation, sharing that they had previously bought and renovated several homes in New Buffalo.
But this project came with a unique challengeโthey had never set foot inside the property. They had to buy the house without seeing it first to make it theirs.
“The seller wouldn’t allow us to go inside the house, show us pictures, or tell us anything as far as floor plan, number of beds, baths,” Tracey said.

Adding to the mystery, all the windows and doors were utterly sealed, leaving the buyers no idea what awaited.
Tracey shared that although they had no idea what the inside of the house looked like, the prime lakefront location made the property too valuable to ignore.
They were also determined to prevent anyone from demolishing it and building a new structure next to their home.

To buy the abandoned house for restoration without an inspection was a risky decision, one they wished could have been avoided.
Their first look inside came on December 14, 2024, when they picked up the keys, marking the start of their renovation journey.
When Ray and Tracey opened the front door, their anticipation quickly returned to unease. The scene inside was overwhelming.
The house was filled with abandoned belongings, personal items scattered everywhere, and chaos. Tracey described it as looking like the property had been ransacked.

As they explored the lakefront home, they found neglected rooms packed with outdated furniture, piles of boxes containing forgotten possessions, and even a hidden attic that had been sealed off and untouched.
The couple’s choice to buy the abandoned house for restoration has proven to be a significant challenge.
Their initial inspection revealed significant issues, including mold and widespread dampness. They’ve begun clearing out the interior as the first step in a complete renovation.
The ambitious project will take at least six months to transform the house into a modern, livable space.

“We hope to keep as much of the original structure as possible, but a lot depends on what we find when we open up the walls,” said Tracey, adding that the house has significant water damage, which was expected due to the roof being covered by a tarp.
The couple took to TikTok to share their unusual experience of buying the house without seeing it first to document the journey.
Their videos quickly gained attention, drawing in a large audience. The first clip, showcasing the chaotic state of the property when they entered, became an instant hit, earning over 2 million views and over 74,000 likes.

They paired the viral video with a lighthearted caption acknowledging the challenge: “We may have bitten off more than we can chew.”
Despite the challenges ahead, Tracey told Newsweek they have no regrets and are excited about their DIY journey.
The overwhelming response on social media came as a complete surprise.
After spending three years trying to buy the house, they decided to record their first look inside when they finally got the keys.

To their amazement, the video went viral, far exceeding their expectations.
When asked for advice for others considering the unconventional path to buy an abandoned house for restoration without prior inspection, Tracey shared a humorous yet practical tip.
She advised not to place too much faith in the assumption that the structure is entirely sound. Instead, she suggested hoping for a pleasant surprise.
